I'm familiar with the monsoons having spent many summers in Phoenix teaching classes my Firm's staff. When did the haboobs start? Or have they always occurred & have just been renamed? Another question, I don't ever recall Sky Harbor closing down because "the asphalt was too hot for the planes to take off" according to my husband who frequently travels back/forth from OC & PHX.

The Sky Harbor incident occurred in June of 1990 when the temperature hit 122 deg. F, and apparently the instructions for setting the flaps on the planes didn't go that high, so they grounded the planes till they could sort it out. It only lasted a few hours, and things were up and running again. :o) I've lived in mesa AZ. since 1976 and have watched the Monsoons bring less and less rain and more dust and wind. This article was spot on about the trees and flooding. Thanks for a good and informative piece.
