My figs are no longer dormant. What should I do?

My figs, which are in containers in my cellar where temps are about 55F, just broke dormancy and are leafing out. Leaves are pale and are about 2 - 3 inches wide. Should I move them into my greenhouse where it is usually 60 F? Or what else should I do with them?

One more thing: I was planning on root pruning two of them because they have been in the same containers for years and are very pot bound.

Should I go ahead and root prune them now?

( kindly saying here next time dont wait until it wakes up) Root prune but trim canopy it may set it back some with late ripening figs if at all but if its really rootbound as you say its best option for tree.

When root pruning its always best to trim canopy to lessen stress on tree as you have less roots to support the top portion.

Once rootpruned yes i would put in greenhouse since its waking up.

Hi Dennis, in January temps in garage usually dip in the teens even though its insulated and attached it just gets cold outdoors here. As of now its 5 above zero outdoors last night it got down between 5 to 10 below zero outside. Its my wifes turn in carpool so the door gets opened more during that week and garage temps get cold as i use no source of heat. Spring is funny here, i try to get early start by bringing them in and out of garage as weather permits in high 40s and sunny out back in at night. They dont show leaves till later part of April. My ishcia black is small looks like shape of slingshot 3 years old going into 4th season and about 6 inches or so tall . Martin

Mcmann i don't like to recommend things to folks for sake of argument on the forum, most folks have there own way and with fig plants they are very forgiving. I do mention things i do and or use and post pictures for those to enjoy of my plants. What i will say if it were my plant and will come out of pot in 2 springs and go into the ground i would slide plant out of pot with its current soil mix some soil you will be growing that plant in from your yard and keep it watered and fertilized for the 2 seasons then transplant it into your yard. In past i have grown a some fig plants in plain ole dirt in a container for several seasons when i first started out years ago and when i pulled it to root prune i decided to use potting soil, its much ligthter in weight and easier on my back to move container around for me, also the soil here from my yard did get compacted and made it very difficult to root prune the plants in containers. The plant will be fine for several years with whatever type of soil you use there pretty tough plants. If you look around the net at fig trees from all over you can see they will grow in pratically anything even out of stone walls ! Martin

Foolishpleasure~~ You are funny! lol.. and no, I don't want any snow, that is why I live in Tucson. ;) Actually we get plenty in the mountians, an hours drive, even have ski resorts. :) And thanks for reminding me about the length of day. :) I'm new to trees of all kinds this season! This will be my first winter having them. Hi Al~ Now I'm going to be difficult and not by choice. lol.. But to bury the pots, really isn't an option here. Gravel landscape, plastic underneath, and brick hard dirt to boot, and the best place for these guys, has pipes underground. SMALL YARD !!:( Plan B? :) Do you think Hubby would notice if I got rid of the boat? lol.. Our area is prone to the onset of spring growth early, even for the in ground tree's. We get a warm spell in Feb. and everything goes nuts and starts to grow, then usually one last big frost in March. So I kinda expect everything to grow sooner than planned. Is that 45* for the daytime highs? And do I just work to keep them moist? our rains really flip flop in winter. Thanks for all your help! :) JJ

An image will provide a good idea of what you are dealing with. I assume the branches are flexible. if so, pull them down a bit and weigh them so they hold their position, just as is done to train young fruit trees. Some of my figtree's are showing a little growth and i am wondering if it is save to graft with a very special variety. The tree is outside right now because we are getting warm temps for 4 days, mid 60's.

Never tried grafting just rooting which i was so so at but it was fun.

Airlayering is something iv'e done in past as its easy for this person.

Our container fig tree's still dormant and the one Hardy Chicago inground out in the open unprotected this mild winter season looks pretty good just still asleep .

Yes airlayering is easy but i have reasonable success with root cuttings. I have never done fig grafting but have grafted just about everything else, hundreds.

Martin, when i was promised some fancy cuttings last fall, grafting came to my mind and have a Chicago Hardy ready and willing for this graft.
