Bosch Induction Owners - Heat Settings/Burner Sizes
Comments (17)fiddle - here's the part of European appliances DH can't get used to. And I have a little problem with it too. I have found with my oven, dishwasher and cooktop - first you have to turn it "on" and then you can proceed. The cooktop has an "On/Off" button to the left of the temperature numbers. Actually there is on/off, child lock, and timer. So, you turn it on and you then select the burner you want. Think of a plus sign with a circle in each of the four quadrants. That sits just on top of the temp numbers. You select which burner, and then hit whatever number you want. When you have more than one burner going, you hit whichever circle that corresponds to the burner you want to change and then hit the number. Don't know that that is a great explanation but . . . I am forever turning the wrong burner off or up or down because I forget to hit the circle first but - I still like it. I know the stainless strip is a big deal to some folks. Just isn't a big deal to me. I did feel lucky it cracked. The only problem was the newer ones require a little more clearance underneath so I lost a little bit of drawer depth. And yes, it has the textured surface. It is labeled "Schott Ceran". My first one did not have the texture and again, I like this better. The Bosch site has manuals you can download. It probably has an illustration of the controls on the cooktop....See MoreInduction cooktop pulsing
Comments (23)I boiled some eggs this morning and at the end of the designated boiling time (at a setting of 5.5), I turned down the hob into the lower settings. I had to choose a setting that was high enough to cause bubble formation because at the lowest settings the induced heat just conducted away. Settings between 3 and 4 would cause effects that could be easily observed. It was evident that the power to the hob was modulating at a roughly 1-Hz rate. Hence my experience is not the same as Gary's and it is possible that my E'lux clone has a different circuit than his. There are no noises associated with this modulation, and it occurs (for the particular pot and water level) at an energy input too low for bubbles to even detach from the pot bottom and potentially make noise at the surface. I don't consider this a defect; but rather a design choice that likely results from some trade-off that wouldn't be apparent to someone who doesn't design induction cooktops for a living. Perhaps switching at a higher frequency would induce additional circuit heating. In any case, induction ready pots and pans have thicker bases with longer thermal time constants, so this effect may not be apparent with their use. Sometime I'll try a handy Emeril pan and see what happens. kas...See MoreBrief review of newest Bosch induction range, HIIP055U
Comments (117)Try rebooting it by turning power on and off at the main circuit. I have not gotten that error message but on very rare occasions the cooktop seems to freeze. If it was a computer you would press cont/alt/del but since it does not have that button we turn power on/off. this happens once every several months so we have not called repair guy out for this. I think that it is the downfall of all electronic equipment - all of them have mini-computers inside.......See MoreDurable, reliable induction range-Miele or Bosch Benchmark w/bridge?
Comments (20)Question about Induction and Chocolate: Well, interestingly enough, I've also been pursuing this same question recently. So, far the answer I've found on tempering has been a resounding maybe. FWIW, I have had no trouble tempering without a double boiler on my current induction cooktop and I've also run across on-line videos that show tempering as well as melting being done with residential induction cooktops. Also, both of the Bosch ranges and the Miele have a power setting that is below the setting their manuals recommend for melting chocolate. (The Bosch manuals recommend 1.5 for melting chocolate and the Miele manual recommends "1 - 2" as the setting.) What I have not been able to find out yet is whether setting 1 on the Bosch ranges or setting "h" ("keep warm") on the Miele will hold a pan at the tempering temperature of around 90° F (+/- 2°). Touch pads versus knobs: I did not see anything offensive in what you said, but I would add that one might prefer a rotary digital interface (knobs) over touch-pads for reasons other than simple "familiarity." As you might guess from my screen-name, I work in digital media production. I have been using touch-pad and touch-screen devices for decades. I'm fine with touchpads and touch screens. However, while cooking on the stovetop, I just find it more ergonomic to grab a knob when my hands are wet or messy, as they all too often are. (What can I say? I am a messy cook and play with food.) I've also found front-mounted knobs are less subject to interruptions from spills from pans on induction stove tops. Finally, I like the tactile feedback from a knob when adjusting burners while cooking. Of course, those are just personal preferences and there are trade-offs to my preferences, including less ease of cleaning with knobs versus touchpads. That all just goes into the mix of things to weigh and balance in choosing between stoves which all represent different mixes of design and engineering trade-offs....See MoreEd
