Vertical Backsplash? A Backsplash Regret?
Comments (28)I can see why it might be advisable to remove the left/rt portions of tile, but I would be inclined to wait until ithe kitchen is completed before deciding. If, as your gut tells you, it "needs" to come down, nothing is really lost except a little more time with it up. Perhaps knowing you are not "locked-in" or committed to it, will help give the perspective to view it more objectively while deciding for sure. This way you will not only have the chance to see it with everything else in place, but you will also have the opportunity to get used to it, before deciding if you truly dislike it, or just haven't gotten used to it being there. As subtle (in color) as our tile is, after months of looking at white painted Sheetrock, it still looked "different" and stood out when we looked at our kitchen. Once we became accustomed to it, we couldn't imagine our walls without it. That's how I am with many things--after living with a blank wall or empty space for any period of time, even a long awaited piece of furniture or decor item jumps out at me, and almost seems like too much, until I get used to the vacant space being filled. Thanks for the compliments on our backsplash Laura and andreak100! It's the Opera Glass tile from Artistic Tile (Stilatto pattern) in Wolfgang White. It does read greenish-blue(-grey) in certain lights or times of day. We had to think about that one while deciding if we wanted to use it, and obviously decided to go for it! Good luck Laura! Honestly, whatever you decide will look terrific!...See MorePot filler w/ this backsplash too busy? Slab or tile backsplash?
Comments (9)Hi Katie, Demo starts tomorrow, so no pics on progress yet, but I'll post when I have some. I'm working a little bit with a KD, and doing the rest myself with cabinetmaker. KD suggested open shelving like in the inspiration pic (but in stainless, specifically). I think it would stress me out though, lol! Having all of my bottles and stuff right out there (the range area is the focal point to basically my whole downstairs living area). My pantry rarely looks fabulous, and I'd be moving the pantry out into the open. So, I think we'll be making the vertical column things on either side of the mantel style range area into pull-out shelves for sheet pans, spices, small bottles, etc. I considered the open shelving with a pretty display of white bowls and dishes, but then I'd lose the storage space for the stuff I really need at my fingertips. Feel free to email me, too, if you want to exchange more ideas. It's a fun process!...See MoreNarrowed down backsplash; please help me decide
Comments (45)Yay!!!! I'm happy for you and think it's a great choice. The 3" X 6" subway tile is a classic for a reason. I personally love the interplay with gloss and matte, so were it my kitchen, I'd absolutely do it, but it has ramifications for your layout. Do you want one pattern throughout, or do you want a decorative element over the range? Every time I add a touch of visual interest with tile, I try to simplify something else, so if I mix colors, I keep shapes uniform. With the color and shape uniform, I would absolutely mix glossy and matte, and I'd do it in a pattern. I love the argyle look. If you want a complicated layout, however, you might again consider a single sheen. The classic subway has what is sometimes called a 1/2 step, meaning the subsequent row is 1/2 a tile offset. By contrast the Heath Ceramics image above has a 1/3 step. You should discuss the layout with your installer, show him pictures of what you have in mind. There are as many options here as you can imagine. Below are just a few of them; the offset bonds are called "stretchers" here.... As for convincing your husband, I'm sure he will be relieved that you found something you love. Beauty is worth waiting for!!...See MoreWhat do you think of this as a backsplash? (Narrowing it down)
Comments (12)I have to agree with the others. The first picture looks ok. The second, too peachy. I think also that it may have too much movement in it with all that is going on in your countertop. I think some color variation is fine, but more subtle would be better. If you want to notice the countertop and the diagonal backsplash, I think it would be best if the backsplash didn't have too much going on in it. You don't want to have too many visually interesting things going on. Go with your instinct and don't worry about what the designer thinks. She doesn't have to live with it!...See Moremathnmusic
