My New Dawn climbs horizontally on a concrete balustrade. Its thorns just attach themselves or I tie the canes with panty hose so that's an easy one. This year, I'm trying to grow things up the retaining wall and for this I stuck two metal post supports in the ground with treated wood fence posts. Then stapled heavy duty SS wire in a diagonal pattern between the two posts. I think it's probably overkill as a support for Falstaff so next Spring I may replace it with rebar and move the wood posts to another retaining wall where I plan to put some more robust climbers....or not. :) I had all these these laying around cluttering up space, so It was a great, cheap solution. I'm still debating how to attach Viking Queen as I don't really know her mature cane habit. I was thinking of just suspending some sort of cattle fencing from the balustrades.

I adore the rebar trellis kingcobb just posted, but think the eye hooks would work well on your wooden fence. I'm not posting any pics this year as it's not that impressive.... yet. ;0

Jackie that is an amazing and extremely impressive photo of Cl CB! What a great idea to use hardware for tying up horses! I will have to look into that. Can you post of photo of what the hardware looks like on the shingles? If possible and accessible without too much trouble or hurting yourself. Your big, healthy, robust roses are a total inspiration!

Vaporvac those are great ideas. I was thinking of possibly doing posts with rebar too. I hope to see photos once you feel as though it's impressive enough to share. ;)

Cori Ann - they are buried in the roses 20 feet up, but here are a couple of pics of similar ones I found on the internet. We only use them for this rose, and a banksia lutea next to it on the house, because they get so heavy.

Probably you already know this, but the roses you're planning on training are very different in dimensions and habit. 'Centifolia Variegata' is shrubby for me and doesn't require support at all, while 'Felicite et Perpetue' is a great big thorny wide-spreading layering beast. They're both great roses. I don't know the other two.

Nahema is going next. I am not a fan of Nahema's wavy foliage, but I really love the foliage on Felicite, and I'm thinking Felicite will cover part of Nahema's foliage or at least distract me from it. That's it for that portion of the fence. I'm planning Centrifolia Variegata to be on her own along a portion of fence near them though. I tried to find the coldest microclimate in my yard for her since she's actually kind of out of my zone. I'm not quite sure how that is going to work out, but I'm hoping for the best. If she does work... I'm hoping that training her horizontally along the fence will allow me to enjoy her blooms that much more. I don't know. We will see. Inspiration... (not my photo)

I may just keep Village Maid in a big ceramic pot along this cooler portion of the fence. It might stay even cooler in the pot. I know for citrus trees in pots we have to protect against freeze if they're in pots, but not if they're warmed by the ground.

Still not quite sure how I'm going to fasten all of these laterally though.

Roses in pots get both colder and hotter than those in the ground. The ground acts as insulation, and protects them from too much heat or too much cold. In your climate I would plant VM in the ground - I don't think the ground freezes where you live, and it would better protect it from heat in the summer, if that is a concern. In general, roses are always better off in the ground (and it takes way less care).

Thanks Jackie. You always have such great advice. I don't have a lot of experience in pots so I prefer the ground anyways. I really hope it works out. It wasn't the greatest looking band from RVR and it's already not really meant for my hot climate so I'm not expecting much. I was actually a little disappointed when it came. Not in the best condition. Sigh. When (If) it grows up can always dump some ice on it I guess.

Cori Ann, ... I use smaller versions of those metal hook thingys seen in your 2nd photo, drilled into the wall there, except mine go into fence posts, and I then use green wire to stretch from hook to hook along the fence, as taut as I can get but not as professional looking as in your first picture...

I then tie in all horizontal canes with green garden string. I insist on green and not brown which shows up too much... I sometimes tie in lateral canes one to another or back to the wire, or just let them hang loose...

I've often posted a photo of this rose below, if only to remind me how much I miss it, as you can maybe see on the right some of the wire but I try to cover it all up. This rose, an Austin noisette called 'Malvern Hills'... grew to 30 foot and I had it trained all along like that. Fortunately with this rose the foliage grew right down to the base, which covered up all my amateurish wiring efforts.. but I do everything myself here, I have no head for heights, and have to keep it all within arms reach.. that's the only way I can garden right now...

Oh... they are so lovely. I dream of a stone wall covered in roses, but in my northeastern zone 5 roses don't always winter over well for me. It can feel like zone 4 due to our proximity to the river, which produces icy winds in the winter. I have learned to content myself with explorer, rugosa and alba roses. Your roses are just gorgeous!

Lam aren't they just beautiful? It seems a shame that I haven't done this yet since we have the climate for it. It must be so hard in some 4/5!

Marlorena that is gorgeous. Is this the type of eye hook that you used in th posts?

I'm thinking I might need something extremely sturdy for Felicite et Perpetue, like what Jackie uses... but for the other roses something like the eye hooks and wire might work. I wonder what gauge wire I should use?

Cori Ann... yes that's exactly it, thanks for finding the image I was trying to detail in my post... below is a photo I just took as the framework is exposed at this time of year due to defoliation and cutting back. I don't just train the wires horizontally but diagonally too, so I get a criss crossing framework, and sometimes I double up on the wires to strengthen the support it gives. I figure that during summer it all gets hidden away with the growth, so any mistakes or messy fixing, gets covered up soon enough...

I don't have any problem with air circulation as I fix these nails or eye hooks, to the fence posts, not the fence panels, so there is quite a gap between the wire and the actual fence itself. You can see what I mean here... this wire is meant to be horizontal so I have to straighten that out, a branch was bending it down somewhat..

Oh I would say not more than 4 Cori Ann, I think that's what I've got out there.. 4 hooks on each fence post with wires going across... starting about 3 foot up from the ground to near the top. It's important to have wires near the top of the fence as wayward canes can drift over the fence to the other side, towards the sun in my case, and it's easier to bring them back and tie in this way...
