bulbs: notes to self
Comments (11)I forgot. Add spider plants and birds' nest ferns to the window box mix. I think. Well, it will all be tender perennials/annuals in any case, with a mix of shapes and habits, and bright tomato-red or salmon flowers. I think I also want a green (thompson seedless, perhaps) grape vine for the front fence. I'll let that idea simmer until the weekend. Lowe's has bare-root grapes in stock. I got some Gladiolus bulbs started along with the cannas. They are in a different container--I have enough horticultural mayhem already going in my spare room, what with two Hostas, three Dahlia plants, a pot of Hymenocallis bulbs and a Peony all potted up and sprouting or growing under lights. How could I resist? Lowe's had them, the prices were good, and I had spring fever. Maria--you are right--we still have a lot of cold weather to go. But the Jasminum nudiflorum is covered in buds, and more Crocuses are emerging every day. The pansies (I plant them in my containers every Fall) are recovering and starting to bloom, and the pond REALLY reeks. I wish the ice chunk would melt some more so I can get the new pump and filter going....See Morelisa'a master bath remodel part II
Comments (48)i'm not quite 100% done, but my bathroom is finally usable!! we got the tub in last weekend and had a few leaky episodes before we figured out that i had missed one of the cpvc fittings when i glued everything together between the hot/cold valves & the spout. fortunately it was an easy fix, and i have been enjoying my new tub since then :) i got a euro type of vanity because of how tight the toilet area is already. never would pass code here because of how close it is to the tub deck, but it wasn't within code to begin with, and once i get an ada toilet it won't be a big deal, at least for me. i would have moved it over a bit, but there is a joist right there so we would have had to go way far or deal with changing the joists - neither was appealing. still looking for a good shower curtain, but in the mean time i'm using a cheap stall liner. also decided to leave the area to the left of the sink undone - i'm not sure what to do with it, so i'm going to live in the room for a while & see what it would be best as. the med cabinet looks a bit off center - just how the stud cavity fell - but it works well with the mirror inside the door, and i think once i figure out all of the rest of that corner, it will look more balanced here are a few pics - please ignore the unfinished details :) lisa from the doorway to the left the shower & ikea storage tower the tub...See MoreLisa's medical thread?
Comments (42)I didn't see the original post, but can add a little about situational depression...my husband died very suddenly when he was 47; I knew I'd be okay, but it was very stressful. The problem for me was calming down enough to sleep. I just couldn't and the longer I went without good sleep the more of a mess I felt - I, too, could not quit crying or pull myself together - very unlike me. I really wanted something to help me just get to sleep. I seldom go to the doctor and didn't have one other than a gyn and she was on maternity leave. So I went to a local clinic and explained the situation (this was 21 years ago) and asked for something to help me sleep, or to lessen my anxiety so I could sleep. The FIRST thing the doctor suggested was an anti depressant! "Wait, my husband just died, I think I'm supposed to feel depressed for a while. I don't want or need an antidepressant." It was the only thing she'd prescribe. I filled it, took one and quit, as I knew it wasn't right for me or my situation. I went back and asked again and she finally, reluctantly (because it can become addictive, I guess) wrote a prescription for ambien (which I knew nothing about and think was fairly new at the time). I took it for a month and finally got back into a good sleep pattern/habit. I refilled it once and took maybe one more week's worth. Who knows what would have happened if I'd started down the antidepressant road? I did NOT need that at all. I'm not saying this about any specific situation on this thread, but I think sometimes our culture has such an aversion to feeling anything that we want a pill to fix everything....See More2016 Wandering Stitchers Retreat at Holston Center
Comments (34)I agree with Sue, I was very apprehensive my first year. I decided that I was going to try it though, since I badly needed that time away from work and the other day to day responsibilities of life. Now I look forward to it as MY vacation for the year. I feel like I have made some lifelong friends at retreat. I look forward to seeing everyone and am sad when some do not get to come. I love that I can sit and piece quilt tops without being bothered by other things. I get a lot done at retreat. Come on and join us this year! And for those of you that already know me, I HAVE A HUGE SURPRISE THIS YEAR. (no I am not pregnant LOL)...See Moregrammyp
