Getting ready for our South Dakota winter

I haven't posted anything for quite some time. I'm getting ready for winter, I take the time to wrap all my conifers with chicken wire. I keeps the rabbits and deer from nibbling them to death. I have quite the collection of wire and fence post. I sleep a lot better knowing each tree is protected

Hi Dennis! Finally the leaves are off the peach, but the white nectarine and apples still have leaves as does one plum. It is now December and we still have 50-60 degree days. It is dark here by 4:30pm. I miss the sunlight so much. My leaves have been raked under the trees, mulch as been back for quite a while. I cannot wait for February to try my new Felco loppers! I have many, many buds on the peach tree for next year. The peach and nectarine seem to grow the fastest. I will take pictures in the spring. I am starting to organize my spray schedule for spring, as it seems so complicated. My peach is now ready for winter, but I am not! Mrs. G

Hi Harv, You must prune off the reverting branches on your maple. They'll grow more vigorously than the variegated branches, and it's best to cut them off as soon as possible. I have to do this every year on my A. campestre 'Carnival'. You have such a lovely garden! It's a treat to see your large specimens, and everything works together so nicely. I live close to the Cathedral in St. Paul, and today I thought it would be nice to walk downtown and do some research at the history center. On the way home--up hill--I was fighting the wind all the way and had to work on regaining balance several times. When I came home I noticed that my kitchen countertops felt kind of grainy. I was wondering, what did I spill? until I realized it was a solid layer of gritty dust that had blown in the windows. I guess that gritty layer is on everything in the house at the moment.

Joan, we just got home Monday after a 16 day trip out there and on up to Calgary, Alberta. Were you by any chance on one of the Your Man Tour groups? Coming from the Atlantic ocean, it was a very sobering and magnificent landscape for us. I had no idea the natural beauty that 'barreness could have! I loved our American farmlands, and Canadian too. Lots of respect for those landowners and ranchers. What a life - met a farmer who stayed at one of our hotels - he had a dentist appointment - 2 hours to get to a dentist. He also told us when I asked about emergency services - - half hour for an ambulance to reach his 'spread' and hour and half to nearest hospital! In a 'real emeregency' helicopters are sent in. Picea omorika 'berliner's weeper' I got it as a young graft many years ago from Mr. Fincham.

You might as well list them all out.

I'm assuming #1 is Glauca Procumbens?

#2 is obviously pendula bruns, and a very nice specimen indeed! Unfortunately I have to keep all of my omorikas caged throughout the season, because the rabbits nibble them in the non-winter months as well. I can tell you keep your's protected because it has a nice skirt. Mine have skirts with no needles :(

#3 looks like a serbian, but not really drooping branches. Maybe a cross like a 'Troemner'?

Sorry if i'm rambling, but #4 in the backround. Looks like some type of weeping norway. Has a nice skirt. Frohberg perhaps?

Post more pictures, I can tell there are there is more to see?

Thanks for the kind words, I'll post more pictures in the future. I have hundreds in my collection, it truly is an addiction. The first one was purchased as Picea Pungens 'pendula'. The 3rd one is Picea Omorika 'bruns'
