Quote for Monday, May 31, 2010 - Memorial Day/ Decoration Day
Comments (5)There is nothing wrong with an enjoyable extended weekend with spring doing its last hurrahs and summer looming around the corner. I do hope, however, that we never ever come to call days like this a bank holiday. It was the common people who let their own blood for this day. Farmers who put down their hoes, paperboys who traded in their caps for helmets, fathers, brothers and sons and also daughters, wives and sisters. I made my rounds to the cemetery plots to lay flowers and revive memories and more than a few of my family gravestones were adorned with the flags of veterans. My father's footstone records service in three wars from foxholes in Europe to the DMZ in Vietnam and many points between. My Uncle, his brother, who died in Normandy. A cousin who served in Vietnam, and died shortly after his return, a broken man. Two 2nd great grandfathers, both of whom were prisoners of war in the War between the States. A grandfather who served in Europe in WWI. I can go all the way back to the first line of my family to have come to this country.....Quakers who took up weapons against their own beliefs to fight in the Revolution. A great Uncle who survived the Spanish American War and volunteered to serve in the Phillipine Rebellion and died there, but his stone sits on an empty grave in the local cemetery. Yes, it's a day in our family we always remember respectfully....See MoreSaturday Hidden home decor
Comments (29)I don't see an overhead light above the chair. It looks to me that, because of the side of the case, the light would have to swing out and around, at which point it would be in front of the pillows, not next to or behind your head where you'd want it to, say, read in bed....See MoreMore hidden home decor
Comments (12)These aren't that rare in some places. About 15 years ago, we were on a driving vacation in Europe. The car rental co. had upgraded us to a Mercedes. which was fine with me. At one medium-sized hotel in an urban center in Germany we had reserved, there was a small driveway I pulled into to register. I asked "Where is the car park?" and was told "just pull forward into the opening, the elevator will take you down to the garage". I'm thinking, what? The "opening" was like a very tight garage portal into the building. I inspected it first- it allowed about 6 inches of leeway for each side and front/back for the car I had. Sweat streaming down my face, I pulled in carefully (which a lot of backs and forths), rolled the window down to push the down button, and took the ride down. After the platform stopped and I backed out, I found myself in a large underground lot with parking for >40 cars. And yes, the only access was this tiny elevator. We stayed there nearly a week, and I had at least one in and out each day. I got more comfortable with practice but the first time was really stressful....See MoreHidden home decor for Thursday
Comments (11)When I was doing real estate appraisals in SoCal, I appraised a house in Whittier that had a pool table that lowered into a temperature-and-humidity-controlled vault. The owners spent a small fortune on that feature, but, unfortunately, it didn't add nearly as much value to the house. Not a big demand for pool tables, much less one that lowers into a vault like that....See Morerob333 (zone 7b)
