Mango Contest: Rate these common #1 best tasting Mango's for flavor

All these Mangos are COMMONLY named as being the #1 Best. Give each one a score of 1-10 and whether you think it is better than the Carrie or not. May the best Mango win.

Personal preferences aside, there are probably only 5-10 or so Mangos that "COMMONLY" get named as being the #1 best tasting.

Carrie is probably the BEST tasting Mango that has been the most widely "sampled" by a lot of Mango lovers that they have tasted at least once and that also often gets top billing. Many people have never had the opportunity to taste an Edwards, Maha Chinook or Lemon Zest, etc. Using Carrie as the base and assuming Carrie is a "9" how do these other Mango's rate that are also COMMONLY listed as being "the best" or peoples favorite compare to Carrie? Please give each one a numerical score and whether they are better or worse than Carrie. The only thing that you're grading on is flavor nothing else.

I am new to planting and growing pawpaws. I will be planting my first ones this Spring. I ordered 4 KSU Atwoods (SKU 2710) and 4 KSU Benson (SKU 2711) trees today for April delivery in Petoskey, Michigan. Like Matt, I would like to know more about these KSU varieties. Size?, Taste, rate of growth, productivity. I ordered them from One Green World in Portland - these were the only Peterson varieties they had available. I may call One Green World tomorrow to ask them these questions but I thought someone on this site might be willing to share their experience or to share what they have heard. I am opening up a standing 2 acre cedar tree lot and have room for more pawpaws ao, when available, I may add several other Peterson varieties this Fall. Hayden is a pretty good mango, the most common type in Hawaii, and quite hardy, can handle bumping, dropping, jiggling, and shipping, and still taste fine. However, once some folks taste white pirie, they may become so spoiled and never want another hayden. White pirie is extremely juicy, drippy/messy, and creamy, unlike the more stringy hayden, and super sweet like candy. The big disadvantage to white pirie, however, is that it must be picked just right to be that good, and must be totally unbruised. Once bruised, the flavor is ruined, awful, and mushy. You will never find this in the market, because it will not stand up to bumping bruising.

Simon, I hope you find a way to taste Edwards and Alfonso and some other mangos. No mango fanatic should have to live on only one kind of mango. That said, if you have access to U.S. grown Kent mangos, you are luckier than many. They are fine indeed. I had a chance to taste Edwards for the first time a couple weeks ago, and it was indeed very good, with a nice balance of flavors, and a great texture. But it didn't quite have the "fruitiness" of a good Kent, or the indescribable richness of a Dot. Unlike boom1, I mostly favor the Indian varieties over the Asian ones, but would hate to live without either. You are on the right track if you taste as many kinds as you can, as often as possible.

Keitts from Mexico are available at Publix right now and labeled as such. Best mango I have ever had from a grocery store (not saying much). I'd give it a 7 on a 1-10 scale. Valencia Pride I rate at & 7.5 to 8 for comparison. Other posters are right that Keitt has a simple uncomplicated mild sweet mango flavor with maybe a hint of pineapple. It's a very agreeable sweet mild tasty mango, but it won't knock your socks off the way some other great varieties will. Tho when it comes to late varieties (Sept+) the choices are much more limited and you can't be quite can't be as choosy. Keitt is a better backyard tree as it has a rather scraggly haphazard appearance.
