Mango tree growth
Comments (3)All my mango trees are very young. Planted only 9-12 months ago. None of them, with the exception of one has flowers. Most of them do not have flowers but have new growth. I am guessing is because it is very young, which is fine since I don't want them to bear fruit when it is very small. I would prefer for all the energy to go to the growth of the trees. The only one that has blooms is one I have potted. I will also be removing the flowers so that the tree can get a little bigger. I am guessing that your Mallika and Alphonso are like my two Cogshall. They are "Dwarf" varieties and grow very slowly. Mine does not have any new growths on it at this time. I am hoping in a month or so I will get them? I have no answer as to why your one Kent is putting out very small growth flushes, when the other one is not. One possible answer, could it have been mislabled and in fact a different variety? Or maybe for some reason its not getting enough nutrients in the root system. You might want to talk to the people from Pine Island Nursery in Miami. They are great and will help you when you have questions about Mangos or other tropical trees. I have called them( or email them) several times. They are always willing to help. I'm sure others will offer their advise, I have only been growing these for less than a year, so I am also learning. Good luck! Sounds like you have a nice selection of Mango trees. I LOVE THEM!!...See Morefinally, some baby mangos in my Edward
Comments (12)Thanks for the complements, Simon - I stopped watering at the end of November just started again last week. Last year I used Grow More 10-52-10 fertilizer, recommend by Quan of Ong's Nursery, every three weeks. This year, I'm going with alaska fish emulsion every 4-5 week. I also mix my eucalyptus mulch with chicken manure another recommendation from a CRFG old timer. NathanL You can buy a Glenn from your local Armstrong Nursery in the summer, they'll order one for you from Laverne, or you can pick one up in Mimosa Nursery in East Los Angeles. jsvand5 - and here in CA we are jealous of all the tropical stuff you guys are able to grow. red_sea_me Yes, that's an interesting comparison but I'm afraid I'm going to have to wait a few years to see any meaningful results...my Edward is only 5' tall....See MoreAnyone try Tebow Mango
Comments (3)I haven't personally tried it, but I have heard nothing but good things about it from people who have. Since it's a new variety it's hard to get first hand opinions :)...See MoreAnyone try Tebow Mango yet?
Comments (27)You might need to give the tree several years before you can be able to make an accurate determination of what the variety tastes like. I know Satsuma mandarin trees can take up to 7 years to develop optimal flavor, and even after that the flavor very slowly continues to improve, reaching a peak at perhaps 18 to 25 years. From a 2 year old tree they are bland and watery; from a 6-7 year old tree they pretty much taste like how they do at the supermarket; from a 25 year old tree they are packed with flavor, almost like the best mandarin variety you can find. I know mandarins and mangoes are like apples and oranges (hahaha, get the joke?) but I am just making an analogy. With mangoes I have read it generally takes 4 to 7 years for the fruits to develop optimal flavor (from the time the plant is a seedling)....See Moreboom1
