What Is The Latest-Blooming Mango?
Comments (14)Keitt is generally regarded to be the "all around" best LATE Mango and will extend your Mango season by about 30-60 days over mid season varieties. I have only had a couple of Keitts. They are very good. Descriptive words that come to mind are: 1. Sweet, Mild & Light 2. Juicy & Refreshing. Clean finish. 3. NOT Rich, Spicy, Complicated, Piney or "indulgent" 4. Simple One dimensional flavor 5. Hints of maybe Pineapple & maybe green grape. NOT orangey or peachy. 6. Easy to like & hard to hate. Good for Mango Noobs or the crazy fools who think they don't like Mangos. If you find yourself in the mood for chilled pineapple chunks, then chilled Keitt "hedgehogs" would probably satisfy your palate even better. Note: I have "occasionally" had a Keitt where there would be just one bite or spot in the fruit that would have a slight "Pina Colada" aftertaste that is quite noticeable in other varieties. But with the Keitt it will only be in one bite or section of the fruit - kinda weird. It's not quite as good as a Valencia Pride or probably a Kent, but in Sept/October if that's the only tree still producing fruit in your yard it will be very much appreciated assuming you haven't already overdosed on the summer July-August mango glut. I would rate a Carrie at about a 9, a VP as about an 8 and Keitt as about a 7. But they are all very good and deserve a place in your yard if you have the space. I have become much more attuned to Mango varieties that actually RELIABLY produce fruit every year as many are prima donnas especially in zone 9 - the northern limit for mangos. Some years or most you get nothing - which isn't fun especially with some varieties. You can rule out a lot of varieties just based on many of them having "issues" that you don't want to have to deal with for a no/low maintenance back yard tree. The first priority with Mango's IMHO is to reliably extend your season from March to October with just 4-5 trees. Best Very Early: Rosigold (March) Best Early: Edward (May) Best Mid-Season: Carrie (July) Best Semi-Late: Valencia Pride or Kent (August) Best Very Late: Keitt (September) Honorable mentions for good trees with exceptional or unique flavor: Maha Chinook Lemon Zest Coconut Cream...See MoreDo Late Mango Blooms = Late Fruit
Comments (1)Hey Tony: You pose an interesting question. With this unprecedented (at least in my fruit growing experience) cold all bets are off. It will be interesting to see how the fruiting season unfolds. Neelum is ordinarily the last mangoes on the trees. This year it is blooming slightly early, but it takes a very long time until the fruit matures, so I still expect it to be one of the later bearing trees. Graham at my house is on to its second blooming cycle. However, Pickering is setting fruits from its first blooming cycle. Stay tuned. We are in uncharted territory. Harry...See More'Brooks Late' Mango
Comments (6)Brooks is actually the second oldest mango to be named in Florida after Haden. It was a Sandersha seedling. It is *probably* the parent of Keitt and its a parent of several other Florida cultivars including Kent. Its a decent producer but fairly average flavor-wise.....its fairly mild, has a little bit of fiber.....its progeny have proven to be better mangoes. Its main 'value' is that fact that its a late-season mango and there aren't as many late season cultivars as early season, but Keitt, Valencia Pride, Lancetilla, and Palmer are all better than Brooks, imo. I think it may be for that reason that some older commercial groves have sold them green.....and it is generally only found in older groves. There are some plantings in Homestead and Merrit Island. Interestingly there is a 'Golden Brooks' mango cultivar which I haven't tried before. Perhaps its an improvement on its parent like 'Golden Lippens' was....See MoreHelp me salvage my mango trees - Is it too late to pug?
Comments (14)Tropicbreezent - HOLY COW! That's a big tree to pug but very cool. You do have an advantage. I'm in SW Florida... As a transplant, by way of Chicago, to me it FEELS like the tropics in summer but I'm still sub-tropics so I probably need to be a bit safer. Thanks so much for posting the pics; I feel better about pugging my tiny woody ones. Duly noted on painting the cuts. I'll hit the hardware store this weekend for white latex and then I'll wait to see these guys recovering before I think about cutting. Tony - That's really cool. I am not an intuitive person at all when it comes to gardening so I'd love to take classes! how many mangoes do you get from a tree the size in your picture? I'm trying to figure out in my mind how you balance keeping a tree small for picking while still big enough to get a lot of mangoes. I could have an 80 ft. tree in my space but I don't want to struggle to pick them or have 100s of rotting fruit on the ground when I don't pick them....See Moreswrancher
