Thoughts on Bona Naturale?

We are installing engineered unfinished white oak floors throughout our house. We like the natural color of white oak in general, but wouldn't mind cooling down the yellow tones a bit and prevent any yellowing in the future. How would you suggest finishing them? Is Bona Naturale a good product for this? We want a matte or oil finished look (but don't want the maintenance of an oil finished floor). We also need a no/low VOC product. Thank you!

I hope someone with knowledge answers this for you, I posted this question months ago and never got a response. So I purchased Bona Naturale and have tested in on our antique reclaimed floors in a couple closets. We didn't want the wood to darken or amber/yellow. And I love it. Next week we'll finish all the floors, barring any disaster with my countertop installation tomorrow. For the second time. They totally messed it up and used the wrong slabs....Another story for another forum! Anyway, I'll try to post pictures but it may be a couple weeks.

Have never used that product, but the literature(from Bona) and the safety data sheets show this product fulfills your wants. It is a two part product(the base material and a hardener) that is recommended to be roll on applied. No info on dry/cure times or walk on/furniture placement times.

Oh that's very unacceptable. If you contracted for Naturale and he switched the product, then he has breached your contract with him and you owe him nothing in most jurisdictions until he provides the product and services that are in the contract. There is no problem applying Naturale over Mega, however the end result may not be the look of untreated wood that you were expecting. The three coats of Mega and the one coat of sealer probably now fills in most of the open graining in the wood. Whether that would overly-compromise the look of just Naturale on the wood is the question you need to answer for yourself. You could, of course, be somewhat reasonable and agree to allow him to apply the Naturale over what he has already done...only with the stipulation that if the end result is unacceptable, then he would be required to start over. However, Naturale is an expensive product...TWICE the price over Mega, so his 'profit' on the job would begin to diminish, but that is his problem, not yours. If this was an intentional switch of product and not a misunderstanding or mistake, then you really have more of an issue here. I wish you the best of luck.

I'm resurrecting this question. I'm laying reclaimed pine and absolutely love the grain when I spray water on it. (Gets the dings out!) I don't want shiny, but I do need to seal this floor. I'm reading about this product, which fine, "natural look." What does that mean!?!? If I apply it, does it make the grain show as water does but matte? Or when the Bona dries is it just like the plain old, dry, just installed wood? In the years since this was originally posted, has anyone out there used this? Thanks.

I think you are on the right track. The nice thing about starting with the glossy stuff is you will see the SHINIEST OF THE SHINY. You can then tone it down from there. The satin will look quite glossy in the first few weeks. But that will calm down. It's just something about the 'fresh' finish that keeps everything very 'fresh and shiny' for a little bit longer than you would expect. Relax and let the process happen. The Bona will take 5-7 days to cure...so take your time and view it (before moving back in) over several days. Take photos from the same spot (like a doorway) every time you visit. Visit at different times during the day to see it's sheen under different lighting situations. If, after 5 days or so you are GROSSLY unhappy, then now would be the time to discuss a coat of matte....before you move in. And by grossly unhappy I mean, "Hyperventilating, dizzy, nauseated at the very thought of what you've just done to your home".

I have some in my showroom. I don't like the look but it's held up well. It goes on so thick and is so dull that it hides the grain of the wood. Part of having certain wood floors is the wood look.

I'm using Rubio on my own floors but I treat them pretty well. That said, the living room and foyer I finished 11 months ago look amazing and I've done very little to them. I had an accident spraying paint. I sanded off the paint and re-oiled the area and it blended right in.

If you want to start the floor off with a lighter color, look into using Bonaseal as the sealer rather than DriFast, DTS or Amberseal.
