Comments (1)Japanese maple cultivars often need some shelter. New spring growth can be prone to frost in exposed positions, summer foliage may burn or fade out on some kinds in hot locations. Also dry, sun-baked soil may cause some top die-back. Bacterial blight is promoted by cool and damp conditions during fall. If a site has the wrong atmosphere or climate for these plants then there is nothing you can do. Except maybe cover the shrubs in fall or spray for bacterial blight every year. I once saw one Oregon producer talking on their web site about moving their Japanese maples into well ventilated houses while still in leaf during fall to prevent bacterial blight. Spraying copper on ones that have been damaged by the sun would not seem to serve any purpose, unless you are thinking bacterial blight might enter the wounds....See MoreHealth of peach swirl and rash shovel pruning
Comments (38)Lily, I have Peach Swirl bought from Edmund's this year. No blooms yet but she's very healthy. My Summer Romance and Earth Angel are both super healthy and covered in their second flush of buds. Both were bought from a nursery this spring and from what I can tell are own root. Are they fertilized with some kind of bloom booster? Could this be the reason? My own root EA and SR, planted in the same beds, are still tiny and have very disappointing bloom so far. Could age be the issue? Fire Opal has flowered once this year, last year she was hardly ever without bloom. Easy Elegance My Girl had one tiny flower, none since. Even my best performers are doing poorly. Windermere is barely growing but did have a nice spring flush. QOSweden is finally putting on some new growth. I've read she has slow repeat but she's so healthy and one of the few Austins that don't nod. Flowers that don't face-plant in the mud are a plus in my book. One Nahema has not flowered at all this year and suffered a lot of winter damage. The other one flowered once, beautiful blooms but very sparse production. Kordes Dark Desire, Fiji and South Africa don't do well for me. The weather has been very stressing this year though, we've had next to no rain and watering isn't helping much, the soil is so dry. None will be shovel pruned this year but they'll probably be replaced with more DA's. DA's seem to like my growing conditions the best. I just might not have enough sun for these other roses. sharon...See MoreEarly Firewood Cutting - Winter Kill - Shovel Pruning
Comments (1)cutting all the dead stems off is the only solution!..macs are such wimps..your winter didn't sound nearly as nasty as mine but you had some dead stems too!..I'm not going to put much effort into it but I might? let my one and only pot stay in the garage next winter..the furnace and hot water heater are in a closet in the garage and it's not nearly as cold as my shed.....See MoreMoses, Pittsburgh, W.
