I have two pix of my wonderful on my smartphone, but no webspace to post them to. Just picture a very short thick trunk with three main branches coming out and then branching out from there to a space of about 4' wide by 10' tall. I will prune a number of times to keep the shape/size and allow a better view of the trunk after the fruit sets. It's a fair amount of ongoing work. Are you sure you are up for it? :) Another challenge I face with my poms is that they want to weep - Some weeping is nice but not to the extent that they look overly floppy or messy. So I use some wire tied to a nearby fence to prop up some of the branches. Poms are the most labor intensive of any of my trees - and it's just because I want a certain look and behavior from them. Keeping them as a bush would be much easier.

If your soil is even average fertility and you added compost when you transplanted, you likely don't need to fertilize. A mulch of something organic to cool roots and conserve moisture this year would probably be of more benefit. My own shrubs are never fertilized (they've never indicated a need) - but are top dressed with compost each Spring. It would help us in answering questions too if you added your garden zone to your sign in page (i.e. Z8 WA)...your climate may make a difference in suggestions you could be given.

In some parts of S FL there is less than a few inches of soil before it hits rock. In the Homestead/Redlands area where Pine Island is, they have to use a rock auger to drill into the rock in order to plant a tree so that is probably what the person was referring to as your hole being to small. In the rest of S FL with some sort of soil other than rock the size of the hole shouldn't really matter. Your tree looks fine. Leave it alone. Since it is young, maybe you should try fertilizing it more frequently on a schedule to get more growth.

ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5 - I realllllly would love to see them in color this year...I'm hoping to take another trip to the nursery to visit the trees again before they come to our house :-). Is that weird? LOL. I literally feel like I searched EVERYWHERE for these trees...I had landscapers calling growers in a bunch of states, and I called more nurseries than I can count in our surrounding states as well. I had no idea this cultivar would be so challenging to find! That is very helpful information about the fertilizer. I had a feeling it may not be necessary (and may do more harm than good), but wanted to ask here since everyone here knows so much more about this than I do! I want to make sure I don't inadvertently do more harm than good to these beauties! We'd prefer to have something where we don't have to manually water each tree, given that there are 10 trees...so leaving the hose on a slow trickle for a long time per tree would take a very long time! The trees will absolutely be mulched as soon as they are planted...I'm hoping this also helps give them a good start. Would I need to water them through the fall? Or mostly only in spring/summer if it's hot and dry? Our soil is definitely not sandy...this much I know. It definitely has clay content, but I wouldn't say it's solely clay or anything like that. I'll try your perk test idea and see what I come up with! And thank you for your link - another one I will bookmark and keep as a reference! :-)
