First Blueberry of the Season
Comments (12)Blueboy, I have picked about 20 pounds so far I would guess. 75% plus of that 20 pounds came from those 2 bushes and they are just about done. I have read about the root rot on the southern belle but have never had any problems with it. Now last year it did develop some leaf fungus very early and ended up shedding those leaves and growing a new set but that was the first time that had happened. I really like southern belle except it is too early. It produces a LOT of shoots from the crown but that is how it seems happiest. Mine must have 20 canes each and every year I prune out a 1/4 of them. It produces almost all of it's fruit at the top of the bush....See MoreLocal Blueberries
Comments (17)Thank you all. It really was good. I took it next door and shared it with our neighbours. They are from a local blueberry farm so they are not wild. Lots of flavour though. Not sure how the price compares to Ontario or elsewhere, but these were on special for the last two days for $9.99 for a five pound box. $2.00 a pound is about the lowest price I've seen them for. I bought another box today. Ann...See MoreWould You Refrigerate a Homemade Blueberry Pie?
Comments (9)Linda, no matter how much I like it, I can only eat small amounts of pie at a time, and DB is not much of a pie eater either. However, when apples are in season, I make a bunch of apple pies, and we get tired of them. If I take one to work, it will get inhaled within a matter of seconds, and so that is one way to cut down on inventory. I have found that keeping pies in a pie keeper works well in the refrigerator, and I warm the pie before eating it. I go through ice cream much faster than I do pie, and so if I make ice cream when I make pies, the pies go faster. BTW, I've never seen mold on a cream pie! The apple pies I made last year were the best ever because I used the vodka pie crust recipe I found here. It's almost time for me to make some more. We still have apple juice from last year that we froze in an empty plastic gallon vodka bottle. I'm going to have to start collecting those again - they work well for freezing apple juice. We got four gallons last year when we decided to pick at the end of the season. The juice was really too sweet for me, and that's probably why I still have it. Comments (10)Has anyone ever made this with Splenda? I love sugar (and blueberries! and cream cheese!), but can't eat that much (I limit myself to less than 15 grams per meal, it's a digestion issue, not a diabetes issue). Based on my quick calculations, assuming 8 servings per pie, just the white sugar is 183 calories and 47 grams of sugar per slice. For comparison, when I make a deep dish apple pie I use 3/4-1 cup sugar. So, has anyone used Splenda or made this with less sugar?...See MoreUser
