Lawn Boy Help
Comments (14)Well I just talked to my friend. (See thread start) The engine starts and runs great though it does have considerable compression when pulling the rope. I think the "V" does have higher compression ratio than the "F" which is the reason for the square, larger, cooling fins (?) He did what I said in post above. The fix does not fit the symptoms to me. He says that now it does not seem to have the crankcase compression with the spark plug out. I still feel like this was perhaps the stuck ring binding in the bottom of the bore where there is generally less wear. This plus the carbon build up in the top of the cylinder jug MAY be the answer, I don't know. Anyway, that's it. Comments (10)I finally viewed the piston via the open exhaust ports and found much play and side to side movement of the piston within the cylinder. I don't recall seeing this in any of my other working Lawn-Boys, so I suspect severe damage to either the cylinder sleeve/liner or the piston. I replaced engine shaft seals and I swapped the carburetor and ignition pack and spark plug with known good replacements and still experiencing the same problem...Engine starts only when completely cold for 5 seconds and dies. Attempts to restart leave wet/raw gas on the spark plug. Spark checks out OK, so I suspect the side to side play of the piston as the cause of problem. I also checked the braking mechanism and on/off contacts and it is working normally. Please advise if any of you folks have experienced this problem and if it may be due to the piston with much side to side movement within the cylinder. Comments (15)first of all there should be NO movement when you grab the crank anyone that say's different should take up collecting stamps because they have no idea what they are taking about.as far as the dura force engine when you have the engine off of the mower deck take out the crank seal on the blade side off and see what kind of movement you have if you see the inner race of the crank bearing move then the problem is the bearing spun in the case and now you have play the older LB had a tab on the bearings to keep them from moving the duraforce does not.i worked on about six so far and everyone of them spun the bearing....See MoreLawn Boy 22261
Comments (5)Thanks for the information. I am new to this forum and would like to thank everyone for the help & advise. From suggesting where to get part's to, I should really go back and buy the 22261. SEPW was suggested for parts and they proved to be excellent. My Quest was to buy one new mower. My JX75's are getting tired, well, not really, but it worked on my wife! I always wanted a Lawn Boy and a 2 Cycle lawn Boy as well. I fell into a great deal on a 22271 but I was not done, I also liked the 10795. When shopping for the 10795 I wound up with the 10796 and the 22261! Winter time in NY is the time to buy lawn mower's. The interesting thing is, my hobby. My hobby is restoring vintage dirt bikes to showroom quality. I wish I could attach a picture here to show my work. So what does this have to do with lawn mowers, simple, I think I found my next restoration project. I never had much interest in restoring lawn mower's but seeing how much interest there is in 22261, I may just have to restore it. Just tonight I received new front wheels and they look great with the already installed new rear wheels and waxed deck. (I never would admit to anyone I wax my lawn mower deck, except here on this forum, nobody else would understand) "Hello, my name is John and I wax my mower" WOW, I feel better Bottom line, I am really enjoying fixing up this 2 cycle mower. Mower was very clean to start with but I am very picky and like to use clean and reliable equipment. I think restoring it to showroom quality would be very cool. Sorry to ramble. I wanted to introduce myself a little since I started to post here and with a pretty crazy mission. Have a great night....See Moreyt125
