monkey puzzle tree repotting?
Comments (2)If you're moving soon I'm not sure why you think it needs repotting at all. It looks perfectly happy and I should think it would be fine in that pot until after the move....See MoreMonkey Puzzle tree outside?
Comments (13)Bboy - if your reply was in response to my comment above, I was just mentioning that they survived -10F which is a cold winter for my area. We rarely go below -5F. I wasn't calling myself zone 6 because this year or last lined up with the range of average lows for zone 6. I completely understand the averaging of annual extreme minimum temperature readings over many years being the basis for the USDA zone system. I reviewed 60+ years of temperature data from my local weather station (I'll be surprised if the monkey puzzle trees survive long term for me though because I don't see them tolerating 4-6 weeks of temps in the teens and 20's F with overnight lows dipping into the single digits or occasionally below 0F, which is pretty typical for us. They would probably have a much better chance if we hovered in the high 20's to low 30's with less often and less severe dips in temperature. We'll see how they fair!...See MoreAdvice on growing Monkey Puzzle Tree in container
Comments (8)We grow on and a sell a lot of monkey puzzles at my nursery and they are all in a very barky soil (as are virtually all the other woodies we grow), something very akin to the 5-1-1 mix. I personally would never use or recommend any Miracle Gro soil product for any long term container growing as it simply does not hold up adequately and its rapid deterioration leads equally rapidly to planting failure. You need to be aware that a containerized MP will be more vulnerable to cold than one planted in the ground and take that into consideration for your location. If your previous MP's succumbed to cold weather, ones grown in containers will need additional winter protection and be taken indoors during any severe cold periods. This is something to keep in mind as these trees grow - as they get larger, they get increasingly more cumbersome to move - MP's are not people-friendly plants :-)) Can't tell you how often to water, as that depends entirely on the weather, the size of the container and the soil mix you use. On the whole, MP's prefer a moister soil than a very dry one. At my nursery, these guys in 1G pots get watered daily during the summer months, which tend to be very dry here....See MoreMonkey Puzzle Tree in Zone 6?
Comments (2)zone pushing is an expensive hobby ... you lose often.. if not always ... there are no guarantees ... so you just wing it ... sooner or later.. in geological time.. that once a decade winter comes along.. and boom .. you lose ... it usually seems to be the year after you say ot yourself.. boy it looks great.. looks like i won .. lol ... that said.. why not try it ... what you might be missing.. is micro climate ... and how yours differs from those you see around town ... as an example.. there is a botanical garden less than ten miles from me ... and they grow a lot of stuff i cant ... conifers i mean ... and the best i can figure.. they are in a depression.. reducing winter winds ... and that is the key to why i cant get things thru winter.. and they can ... all that said.. give it a try ... whats to lose.. no matter what happens.. you will learn something ... ken...See MoreDave in NoVA • N.
