Comments (2)Depending on the slope, this could be reasonable. Does the contractor have to build a small retaining wall to hold up the patio at the lower edge? This is where pavers stop being cheap. When doing brick or flagstone on a new concrete slab, the contractor can often make up the elevation difference with a turndown slab, then backfill around the edge and grade it off. With pavers you need to do something to hold in all that base material....See MoreKitchen Addition estimates, "micro additions", surviving Sticker Shock
Comments (12)Thanks so much!!! @Sophie Wheeler, no wonder it did not make sense to me...I did not realize cost estimators were always assuming NEW construction. Having a figure of $450/sf as a start for our guesstimating is immensely helpful. I think we need to move out of the northeast, or downsize to a yurt. :)...See MoreAddition remodel sticker shock
Comments (10)That is an interesting website, live_wire_oak. We're a bit lower end finishes than the mid range master, but sizewise pretty comparable. I downloaded the data for the local region (Mountain, Boise: right state, 300+miles off) and adjacent (Pacific, Spokane, WA: wrong state, in the neighborhood geographically). Looking at prices, the Pacific region is probably more accurate. It was very eye opening and I wish I'd come across this at the outset. We were hoping to avoid financing, so my husband and I will need to have a serious discussion about phasing it, maybe starting with porches and saving up for the master, and possibly explore costs for building within the garage, bringing it down to a two car 25x26, which is not our favorite option although there's room to add a 16x36 3rd bay eventually....See MoreHOLY STICKER SHOCK! - What did you pay?
Comments (91)@sabrown - Thanks! I'm all about trying to make a timeless look. We worked with Superior Woodcraft for our custom cabinets in our kitchen in Philly and had them copy that design for our new home in NYC. I looked at tons of butler pantry pics and got really specific about the width of the styles, inset cabinets, and the molding, which they replicated from a salvaged door I had on my laundry closet in Philly. They are installing a built in bookcase in our living room next week to match. The color is Farrow and Ball White Tie to match the walls in our kitchen and other living space. It was not a great paint for them to work with. Our Philly cabinets were Ben Moore Maritime White and looked great too. Superior is woman owned and run and they work around the East Coast. They've been in business for 60 years. It wasn't the smoothest experience this time around but I chalk it up to Covid. Their customer service is outstanding....See Morechisue
