What's your best seller/most profitable crop?
Comments (30)Desirae, I pick only the male blossoms( they only bloom for one day before falling off anyway) early in the morning and put them in a cooler to let the bees and bugs escape. I then put them in a Ziplock and into the fridge. They will keep for several days. Winter squash and pumpkins make the best blossoms. I'll advertise them on my mailings, and I have agreement w/my restaurant for anywhere from 500-1200 per week, depending on demand. I'll also take a few to the market and sell them there. My fruit production has never been hurt by harvesting all those males either. If you are going to the effort of planting asparagus for sales, I would advise going w/roots and the all male varieties. The long term production from them is significantly greater. The purple variety is impressive too. You'll get huge stalks, a lot of them, and it's recommended they be planted closer together. Planting seeds means you don't know what the plants have crossed with and you'll likely get a preponderous number of females, which expend a lot of energy making seeds rather than stalks. Actually, you'll still get roughly 25% females w/the supposed "all male" varieties as it is. There are some places you can get good roots at a great price--ie Simmons in Ark and DeBruyn in Mich....See MoreSummer is FINALLY here! How 's your garden growing?
Comments (68)It IS taking a long time to load, Bonnie. I was able to fold half a line of clothes waiting . . . Does starting a harvest thread make sense? I had lettuce in my lunch sandwich today but we are definitely down to the last of it. We'll see if the most recent transplants can overcome the dog days of Summer. Three beds of peas have been ripped out so far. I harvested the shallots from sets this week! A little early but it was either get them out of the ground or allow the weeds in the bed to run to seed! What is with the onion family? They offer ZERO resistance to weeds and trying to pull a weed beside an onion at almost any stage of growth means taking a 50/50 chance of ripping the onion out of the ground along with the weed! Fortunately, I've still got the shallots-from-seed left in the bed, uh well, 50% of them. I think they'll be able to grow to be sets that can survive a Winter. I'd be pleased to get another variety going. All onions are doing well where more attentive weeding prevailed. Altho' I am a little worried about my leeks. I blamed the American Flag variety for being so scrawny last year and went back to Lancelot . . . they seem rather scrawny, themselves. It looks as tho' sweet onions from seed will continue "bulbing-up" sufficiently not to embarrass me in o8. The sweets from plants are HUGE! The little leeks will get more fish emulsion tomorrow and maybe they can catch up. The 1st zucchini came off a vine nearly 10 days ago. Not much sign of anything else in the cucurbit patch with the exception of small Fastbreak cantaloupes forming! Oh, and it looks like I'll have a good sized pun'kin for Halloween. The earliest of the sweet corn has started to tassel. And hey, I've got the 1st Dusky eggplant for tomorrow's lunch!! Somehow, it seems like we should be later in the season . . . Maybe that's because we went from a cool Spring, to very pleasant warm weather, to some Summer HEAT, to today. Whereas it was 91° mid-afternoon yesterday, it was 63° with a smattering of rain showers at the same time today. Makes it seem like Autumn. digitS'...See MoreRECIPE: Bloody Mary's you do not have to drink!

Comments (10)Back in the 70's when Super Bowl was held early in the day, I use to make this one for my Super Bowl Brunch: 2 46 oz. tomato juice, chilled, 2 10 1/2 oz. beef broth, chilled, 5 C. vodka, chilled, 2/3 C. lemon juice, 2 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 tsp Tabasco Mix together and put in punch bowl. Float lime slices. 24 servings (I added 1 T. seasoned salt, 1 tsp. ground pepper, 1 T. celery salt, 2 tsp. celery seed.) The most recent recipe I tried is: 3 large stalks celery including leaves, 36 oz. tomato juice (recommended Sacramento) 2 tsp. horseradish, 1 tsp. grated onion, 1 lemon, juiced, 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 tsp. celery salt, 1/4 tsp. Kosher salt, 12 dashes Tabasco sauce, 1 1/2 C. vodka Cut celery in large dice, including leaves. Puree in food processor. Process until finely minced.. In large pitcher, combine remaining ingredients except vodka. With processor running, pour 1/4 of tomato mixture into food processor through feed tube. Then pour contents of processor into pitcher with remaining tomato mixture. Add vodka and chill I think they're both good....See Moreseagrass_gw Cape Cod
