Are they dumbing down Jeopardy?
Comments (15)If you'll remember in the past 99% of the winners were white males... they dumbed down the questions and changed the contestant qualifying test so that females could win. They did this due to the negative backlash they received having only white male contestants and winners. In the past when there was a female contestant she was always blown out by the males....See MoreOT (Sort of) Jeopardy, Anyone
Comments (27)I missed this thread ... glad it came back up. My husband and I are avid fans. I tried out for Jeopardy! around the time granjan did -- at least ten years ago, when it was still being made in the Burbank area. I took the test and was one of the three selected that day for an interview. We played a mock game on a mock set and I did as well as the other two. They told us if we weren't contacted by August, that was it. We'd have to try out all over again for the following season. They also warned us that many teachers and students apply for the show, but the producers want contestants from as wide a variety of occupations as possible. I assume that worked against me, since I am a teacher. (Okay, maybe it was my personality.) They never got in touch. At any rate, I didn't try out again. I was so happy to get the interview, that was enough for me! My friend's mother was actually on Jeopardy! (senior tournament, she didn't win) and we all went to watch. That's where I learned more about the show. Alex was pleasant to everyone, even the go-fers. The audience has to be really quiet -- it's very hard to sit there and not shout out answers (like we do at home). As I recall they were taping 5 shows that day, so the contestants had to have changes of clothes, as mariannese mentioned. Besides literature, facts about Canada, U.S. presidents and state capitals are heavily featured....See MoreIf you watched Jeopardy last night . . .
Comments (35)I'm sure you're right, Walnut, but we're all entitled to our individual preferences. Her demeanor at the very end of the show did not draw me in, but today I watched Alex's interview with her (referenced by Rob above), and I found that a lot more appealing. I can't find a free source for watching Jeopardy episodes online. Anybody know of one?...See MoreStill watching Jeopardy!?
Comments (44)James is a Chicago area guy, and I heard a bit of an interview with his brother on the radio. The brother says James never did homework but aced exams, especially in math. In college he didn't go to class regularly, but took the exams, but that backfired on him once: because he didn't go to class, he didn't know the final exam day had changed, and he showed up for it a day late, and hence failed the course. I also heard he prepares for things like this by reading middle-school-targeted books. They have a lot of information presented in an interesting way for people who aren't interested lol. So in that way, he kind of has the edge that Ken Jennings had: he was a test-writer, or something like that. Ken said the category he had to study was Potent Potables, because he doesn't drink. James is clearly highly gifted (probably profoundly gifted) and is able to soak up information like a sponge, "figure things out", and apply what he learns in interesting ways. And he's not afraid to take chances! After all, now that he has all this money, he can play around, guess, hesitate on buzzing in, skip the buzzer, and wager whatever he wants, large or small....See Moremurraysmom Zone 6a OH
