Comments (4)How long will they need this shade? Not sure in your area. Mine are still in the shade, but my understanding is that it needs shade until it reaches large size and/or gets it's roots/rhizomes well established. At this time, the bamboo itself shades the ground, keeping it cooler. It may be that the ground needs shade more so than the culms...not sure though. We have temps here in the 100's also, but mostly mid to upper 90's. They're almost 30 years old and from what I've read they've already well exceeded their expected useful life. If you trim the trees carefully, and a small amount each year, they can live much longer than 30 years. Will it still be necessary to give them shade at this point? You may try removing the shade and see what happens. Keep a close eye on it though. If it starts to look unhealthy, immediately recover it. It won't die over night, but you may set it back if the heat does start to harm it. The close-up of the variegated leaves looks like my D. asper, which gets the purple culm sheaths and variegated leaves usually early in the year, but go away by Summer. Not sure about them burning more easily. My asper's variegated leaves never get sun burned. How much direct sun does it get(hours daily)? Kt...See MoreAnyone else have sensitive teeth?
Comments (19)Hi, Sheesh. I'm a dental hygienist and I can suggest a few things. It's common for teeth to have sensitivity that comes and goes, especially in children---but it's usually cold sensitivity. Stay away from any toothpastes that advertise extra-whitening or extra tartar control. (That eliminates almost all of them on the market.)They actually use abrasives in the toothpastes that will abrade microns of tooth structure away, causing sensitivity. This is particularly bad for those with root recession, as the root is so much softer than enamel and wears that much quicker. I love plain ol' Colgate Total. Sensodyne is a good, OTC paste for tooth sensitivity but even they have begun to put abrasives in their toothpaste in the last couple of years. If you can find the original Sensodyne that does not advertise whitening, you're good. Fluoride usage will take away sensitivity. A mouth rinse that used to be prescription that just went OTC is called Phos-Flur. It can be found in WalMart for around $15 and is great for cavity prevention. All of my orthodontic patients use it, and DH and I use it at home too. It's the best stuff on the market that's over-the-counter. Other reasons for your sensivity could be that you're grinding your teeth, your bite may be off and you're hitting your canines hard, or you do have decay. If you went to the dentist recently, did you get xrays? And if you did, I'm guessing you got the annual 4 called "bitewings," and those won't necessarily image your canines. My recommendation: if it's been going on for over 2 weeks, place a phone call to your dentist. :)...See MoreAnyone else have any experience with TimberTech Earthwood?
Comments (2)I've spoken to salesmen at two different lumber yards, they've said if scratching is a big concern go with the Twin plank rather then Earthwood. Apparently with weathering the scratches somewhat blend. My big concern is having to shovel snow off of the steps and deck in the winter without scratching it excessively. Since the Earthwood is new I don't think anyone's gone through a winter with it yet. I'm calling TimberTech on Monday to see what they can tell me. It's not an easy decision because the Earthwood product looks so much nicer than the Twin plank finish! I hate to settle for the Twin plank but tons of scratches will really upset me....See MoreGreat experience with Luxury Link! Has anyone else used them?
Comments (2)Doris, sounds like you had a wonderful 20th anniversary! We were in Key West about 4 years ago when we took a cruise. I really liked Key West, the lovely streets and I enjoyed touring the Mel Fisher museum and seeing the gold recovered from the shipwreck.(my memory fails me but I can't think of the name of the ship!) Old shipwrecks and recovered treasures fasinate me so Key West has a history of my fasination. Our 36th anniversary was last month but we only had 3 days to go somewhere, so we went to Harrahs Casino in Cherokee and gambled. We had a ball!...See Morerob333 (zone 7b)
