I'd like to be able to close the door on them partly to just obscure them from view, and also to keep from getting cooking gunk in them. It's not a safety thing so much - we're all grownups here, but an aesthetic thing. Even with cutesy faceplates, outlets just aren't something I want to stand out in my kitchen.

Well, I can't say that I have ever seen a cover that looks any better than the normal receptacle :-/ Most just make them stand out more obviously.

I agree...any cover will attract more attention than the standard plate.

In this case I already know I want them. I've worked in two separate businesses that had attractive, hinged outlet covers that I liked, and that's the aesthetic I want here. They weren't the utilitarian and temporary ugly things you find in babies' rooms or on outdoor outlets, but covers made especially for indoor environments that want to cover outlets up. I know they do, or at least at one time did, exist. The trouble I'm running into is just finding a source for them.

If it is possible to go to one of those places and take a picture, it might help, but I don't recall anything like that at the moment. They may have been discontinued since tamper resistant receptacles are now required by code? Or Legrand has a pop out receptacle.

That's a neat receptacle, although I can't figure out what I do with one and at nearly $40 each, couldn't see having too many of them. Any potential buyer should also consider that it requires a junction box with a minimum of 22.5 cubic inches.
