Seattle truly does have relatively few bugs compared to many parts of the country... Despite our reputation for rain, our summers are typically fairly dry (we don't have the summer rain storms typical of the Midwest, East, South, etc.) and have relatively low humidity in the summer (when compared again to the Midwest, East Coast, South, etc.). While situated on a land bridge between two large bodies of water (Lake Washington and Puget Sound), neither water source is a suitable breeding ground for mosquitos (they are too deep, too cold, not still enough, one is salt water, etc.). Light breezes coming off the water further discourage large mosquito populations in the city. So while it may be true that we have many varieties of insects, they are not typically plentiful enough in the city during the summer to be such a nuisance that intensive screening is necessary. I've never even heard of anyone encountering a tick here in the city either. It's not unheard of to see or hear mosquitos... but they're not the pervasive pests that they are throughout the majority of the US in the summer (unless you're hiking near the small mountain lakes of the Cascade Range or in Eastern Washington, etc.) Screened porches common in other parts of the country are the exception here, not the rule. It truly is a glorious feature of summers in the Pacific Northwest... minimal insect nuisances mean wonderful and direct outdoor living is possible, even if only for a few short months of the year!

We moved to the Seattle area from the midwest and can attest to the pleasant, bug-free summers. Even with all the rain and water, it does not get hot enough here for breeding many mosquitoes. Finally, we can enjoy being outdoors, even though it's cooler than Wisconsin.

We have no screens on our windows in the city of Seattle. Never a mosquito in 8 years. We do occasionally have a fly enter the house but it is rare. Mosquitoes and other insects in Seattle tend to live in very constrained areas, unlike being seemingly ubiquitous like they are in the Midwest and east, where I've lived much of my life. Hence the varied experience of people concerning Seattle bug life.
