Wall switch and outlet cover options
Comments (21)We used Columbia Gorge Stoneworks to get wall plates made from out granite. They were great! We used the scrap from the sink cut-outs. Because our stone has a lot of color variation, we marked where we wanted the wall plates cut and we sent them pictures of the stone around the outlets/switches. There was one plate where they weren't able to use the stone we had marked and they found an alternate spot that was a really good match. They can also make them from your ceramic tile. Lutron will send you free samples of the colors - get the samples as the colors look a lot different than on line. Ones that looked like they would work on line didn't when we had the samples in person. We used Midnight satin (kind of semi-gloss black). Arnev.com has a lot of other wall plates including wood in various species that you can order finished or unfinished. We used the cherry for the outlets on our island sides. They also have paintable metal covers. Here is a link that might be useful: Columbia Gorge Stoneworks...See Moreold grates/switch plates/outlet cover sources?
Comments (5)I've found that when looking on ebay, it's best to use the words "vintage" or "antique" in the search. I look for vintage grate, antique grate. Right now, there's quite a few hits with vintage grate. For switchplates, I've never found that you'll get alot of covers at one time and it takes alot of patience to build up a quantity. So, I shop at classicaccents.net. I've purchased also from rejuvenation.com, but the switchplate covers are about the same, just cheaper from classicaccents. Do you live in a community that has architectural salvage stores? Because grates typically weight alot, often being made of cast iron, you can save on the shipping by shopping in store. That's the way we've purchased the grates that we have purchased. We're in greater Chicago but I've gone to salvage places across the country. Are you looking for other hardware pieces? If so, try the exact name in your searches....See More1929 light switches
Comments (10)You can get a plethora of great older switchplates on eBay, and the Classic Accents pushbutton switches are UL listed and very easy to install. They come in dual and triple pole, with dimmers, etc. I did all CA pushbuttons in my 1924 bungalow, using older vintage brass plates, and they looked marvelous: Here's an odd plea for folks out hunting the fields & meadows for old switches: I recently bought a 1910 house that still has many of its original turn light switches, and am always hunting for more to replace the broken ones. They look like this - as you can see, some are broken and one was replaced some time in the forties with a flip switch: If anyone comes across any - they have a narrow rectangular porcelain back like a regular light switch, not the larger industrial ones with a large round back - I'd be insanely obliged for tips on where you saw them. Thanks!...See Moretravertine outlet and switchplate covers?
Comments (12)Thanks everyone! ngng...what granite is that?? It is really pretty! Travertine switchplate covers may not be in my budget either, now that I am seeing how much they cost. lol! I will look at the ones Lutron has and also look at some resin ones I have seen. I may also look into faux painting on the plastic ones....See Morecmara
