Bluestar rangetop gas smell

My brand new Bluestar rangetop smells of gas when the burners are on. Especially the 22K BTU ones. When the burners are off there is no gas smell.

Is this normal?

Probably not normal, depending on exactly what you are smelling.

Is it all of the burners or just one in particular?

Does the flame have any yellow color in it?

Is it natural gas or propane?

Natural gas

The flame has a little yellow on top

And the gas smell is especially noticeable with two 22k BTU burners at HIGH.

I haven't used the oven too many times since posting and when I have there has been no gas smell. I spoke to the local service guy (who's been working on gas and Garlands for over 30 years) and from what I told him he knew what it was. The top surface burner is igniting too slowly or something so unlit gas is escaping, but only very intermittently. He's going to fix it for me but he has to go through certain steps with Bluestar now which is something he's not used to. He usually just goes and fixes things, but he said that Bluestar is trying to be perfectly consistent and make sure every service company reports and does the same thing. Makes sense to me. I wouldn't be nervous about the service issues at all. This service guy, for example, had never laid eyes on a Bluestar before showing up to my house to install it. He immediatly recognized it as a Garland and felt totally comfortable working on it. He was also able to diagnose it over the phone simply because it's a basice gas range and therefore experience and skill can be relied upon rather than complicated electronics and technical manuals. Just my 2 cents.

Check the power of each burner. Rangetops often have more power. Continuous grates--which might be available on either--are much better than Euro grates which sit above the plane of the cooktop so it's easy to knock your pot off, and are somewhat better than individual grates that are sunk into the plane of the cooktop. Another thing to check for is if it can be lit with a match during a power outage. A difference that a lot of people don't notice is configuration. Having the knobs on top takes up some space, so in the same width the burners may be squished together just that tad too much for comfort on a cooktop. The knob assemblies et al. on a range top often take too much cupboard space. Do you need a utensil drawer right underneath? If the burners and grates are the same, if you're not worried about the knobs viz safety, and you have the simmer rings or other features you might want, then obviously what's left is "impressive" for the rangetop. It's all those features, powers and sizes, however, that affect your cooking. For that, go to the makers' websites and look at the installation and use manuals, and compare what you actually get from each.

When we got a new propane tank installed, I discovered that I can smell propane even when the electronic detectors cannot detect it. The mercaptan odorant that is added to propane is overwhelmingly strong smelling for some people and it can stick around for a long time even when there is no longer evidence of the propane gas itself. That said, if your range is brand new, it is also possible that you could be smelling the liquid gas pipe sealant used during installation. It has a smell that could be mistaken for the smell of propane. Try taking the grates, bowls and burners out on the left hand side and sniff around to try and locate the source of the smell. The gas intake pipes and regulator are on that side.

Just wanted to add to this thread in case someone else comes across it for similar reasons to myself. I've been looking at doing two Bluestar ranges (not rangetops like the OP) side-by-side; a 24" and 36". This is because rather than having two 30" ovens, I'd prefer to have a smaller 24" oven and a larger 36" one. I talked it over with our Abt rep who sells Bluestar - specifically about an RNB 24" all griddle range and a RNB 36" all burner one, and he doesn't see a problem. After seeing this thread though, I'm considering doing an RNB 24" all griddle next to a Platinum 36" all burner. I don't anticipate needing the extra BTUs of a 25k vs 22k burner, but I am interested in the PowR true European convection oven with faster preheat. (Our remodel setup is replacing a 48" dual fuel Wolf range). The plan is to cover the whole set-up with a 66" hood. I'll update once the final decision/purchase has been made, and then hopefully again post install :).

There should be no yellow at all with natural gas.

First, make sure that the burner venturi tubes are centered, straight, and fully engaged over their brass orifices (pushed as far as possible toward the front of the rangetop). Also verify that the orifice fittings are not loose on their threads.

Next, you will need to adjust the air shutters on those burners to increase the air in the air/gas mixture until the flame has no yellow at all but still does not separate from the burner surface when on high. Check the manual or online videos at bluestar.com for this adjustment procedure. It is very easy to do (or you could call your installer back and get them to do it).

Are you running the exhaust fan while the burner is on? Do you start them before you light the burners? If I run two burners at HIGH for a few minutes without the fan, I can detect some gas odor. I've got a pretty good sense of smell. As would be expected, if I run the exhaust fan it's much more difficult to detect.

If you are planning on running a few burners for an extended period of time, I would say more than five minutes, you should turn the exhaust fan on prior to lighting the burners. It's a good habit to run the exhaust anytime you fire up a burner. Doing it earlier will help start the airflow in the right direction.

Haven't tried it with a fan, will do.

The fan will suck the odor in, but it is still there.

So it is normal to have some gas smell at HIGH?

You should not have any gas odor when operating the 22k burners. The only time I smell any odor on my BS 22k burners are if the burner takes several clicks to light. You might get a short burst of gas smell but your saying the odor is there when you are using the 22k burner. I have NO odor from my burners when in use. Not normal or right to be smelling gas when your burner is on, maybe a leaky valve? Although in that case you would probably smell the gas when your burners are off too....

Yeah, there is no odor when the burners are off, so valves are not leaking.

You should keep investigating this, it is not normal...Have you talked to a Bluestar tech re: this?

Maybe it's a loose or improperly connected Venturi tube. The gas will only flow through that tube when engaged by turning the knob. So you wouldn't necessarily smell has when the burners are not in use.

I also agree with the other posters and echo the notion that the smell of gas when using the burner is not normal, except for the brief few seconds it takes for the igniters to light the gas after turning it on.

The gas won't flow if the venture tube isn't fully seated in the slot. The cleaning lady is always pulling it out when she cleans the grates. So, I have to reset them all of the time.

When I referred to a gas smell. I can tell when gas has burned off if the range top has run for a time and I haven't turned on the ventilation. I think that may be what tigrangrig is experiencing.
