Update/progress report Farrow & Ball Cornforth White DIY kitchen
Comments (13)Thanks everyone for your kind words of encouragement! I will try and post some more photos, including one of the side bookcase and shelf as soon as I get new camera batteries. Hi Aliris19-you were right, the grill is a plinth fan heater! We kept it as I sort of like the industrial vibe it gives off. It was originally dark brown but instead of replacing it we sprayed it's grill with chrome heat-resistant radiator spray to save money as it worked perfectly. That radiator spraypaint (which is about $10 a can) has done loads in our kitchen! Our ceiling spotlights (can lighting in the States?) were all brass coloured so we just resprayed them chrome whilst still in situ (we placed a card template around them) as we couldn't afford the expense of changing them. You would never know to look at them! Thanks Boxer-I'm glad you like the bowls on the shelf-they are my favourite too. They're by Emma Bridgewater-I'm not sure if she is known in the States or not? Have a great weekend all!...See MoreOld Post about Farrow & Ball...
Comments (11)I cannot give you a direct answer, but I can tell you some of my experience. I have a strong preference for very flat finishes and so I gravitate to the Estate Emulsion. However, in my laundry room, which has many walls and a weird sort of dog leg shape, one area has Modern Emulsion in Teresa's Green, a much clearer color than Pigeon. ME has 2% sheen level. That's pretty low. Honestly, I do not notice the shine at all, unless I really look for it and the lighting is just so. Unfortunately, I have no Ben Moore, so cannot compare. What I can tell you, though, is that DH has done a lot of painting in his day and the first time he hefted a can of F&B he was amazed at how heavy it was. All that clay and pigment is heavy stuff; I fail to see how that could fail to affect your perception of the color. I have Estate Emulsion in Red Earth and Blue Ground elsewhere. The color seems to come off the walls and envelop me in the rooms. I love this stuff. However, I recently discovered, after two years, that the Red Earth isn't scrubbable, unlike the other colors in Estate Emulsion. Go figure. I'm not fond of the texture of our walls (too heavy and really soaks up the paint). F&B definitely mellows out our texture, a phenomenon that contributes to the depth of the coloration. Frankly, were I in your situation, I would buy a quart of the real deal and do a head to head head comparison with the Ben Moore version on a wall. I don't know what your wall texture and light are like. As an aside, I have EE Radicchio on a wall in a game room "kitchenette" and it appears shinier than usual. I don't know if that's because of how dark it is or because of the light in there, but that's been a disappointment to me. I must say, your photos of Pigeon look like I would expect Pigeon to look, but that a very vague statement....See MoreKeeping Vintage Cabinets:Farrow & Ball Paint? Need Frig & Hood
Comments (1)It's pretty common for older homes not to have range hoods, but happily looks like it should be relatively easy to add, from your photo. You can cook without it till you get to it, though. (We've been cooking without one for three years, and previous owners cooked without it for 90-odd years before then!) We don't have our fridge yet so I can't comment on performance, but it does meet your height requirement---the Fisher & Paykel single door bottom freezer. I really like the interior and freezer designs, though again, we haven't used it yet. Needs 69" of height for venting and 33" of width (can't tell how much space you have there?), comes in stainless (and also white), and is pretty reasonably priced. We're buying ours locally, which also ended up being the cheapest option, for whatever that's worth. Good luck---and I love your stainless countertops!...See MoreAre Farrow and Ball paints good for kitchen cabinets?
Comments (5)Our last kitchen (unfitted English style) was painted with F&B paint. The island and refrigerator section was also glazed. A hutch was not glazed. We didn't have problems with fingerprints or chipping. Could have been because the harder used areas had a glaze as well? We lived there 13yrs. Our current kitchen is also English, and while I used a F&B color, the cabinetmaker does not use F&B paint. He uses a harder sprayed on finish. He said years of experience and unhappy customers. I also spoke with a friend in the color expert field before selecting interior house paint that said many professionals do not recommend F&B paint because of maintenance issues....See MoreMinaLoy
