Update/progress report Farrow & Ball Cornforth White DIY kitchen

Hi all! Hope you are all well across the pond! Have been away for a while as things are very,very hectic as we near the home stretch! We have finally, finally got the oak flooring down that matches the window sill and the drip rail under the farmers/Butlers sink! We then sat the new plinths/ skirting boards (kickboards in the USA?) straight ontop of the new flooring. We continued the new plinths onto the walls as well for a more uniform look, and painted them the same colour. Most of the main cabinets are finished now, but 'we' lol still have to construct the cabinet that's going to house the fridge freezer! We are going to put long T-bar handles on that instead of the cup handle/pulls that are on the rest of our drawers! All of the cupboards doors and drawers will have to be lined up and adjusted at the end, but I'm so happy to be 80% there! It's nothing fancy like some of the beautiful kitchens I drool over on here, but it looks much brighter and nicer than what we had before! It's really hard to take a good shot as the kitchen is tiny compared to US kitchens, so sorry about the weird photo angle!!!

Can't wait to install the little black Aga!! Not long now! It's taken us a long, long time as the DH has done everything himself, including making all the cupboards with a hand saw and an Ikea Beckvam stool as a workbench!!! He's not a carpenter just a have-a-go-yourselfer!!

Thanks to all of you Gardenwebbers-you've been such a source of inspiration-we have nothing as good (and as fun and helpful) as your site here in the UK!

Hello Woodnotrust and Pricklypearcactus, Last week, in a final fit of doubt, I called around to all the stone warehouses I had visited to see if anyone had received any new 3cm slabs, which might save us the whole debate of a built-up edge. One stone supplier was kind enough to send photos of 3cm calacatta slabs sitting in a Montreal warehouse. But in the end, we decided we still preferred the marble we'd tagged and so I made the down payment on the slab in anticipation of our shceduled cabinet installation this week. But now our cabinetmaker needs a little more time, and that, coupled with a business trip on our end means everything is postponed until early March. Now that we have ample to time to second guess our decision, we especially appreciate your support of our choice. At this point we have decided to use the eased square-edge with set back ogee underneath. The marble will be honed by our fabricator. Pricklypearcactus, we did consider your idea of reversing the profile for the lower part of the counter, but decided that cleaning the square edge will be easier, and the extra counterspace still desirable, so we are going to keep the two edges the same. I don't know if you saw our other thread about whether stainless or soapstone would be the better surface for our perimeter counters, but on the weekend we visited two soapstone importers and were won over. It will be a higher contrast scheme than we'd been planning, but we are finding ourselves quite excited about the prospect. We may even decide to paint the island cabinetry quite dark. I have my eye on Farrow & Ball's off black, but that will be a debate for March. N especially seemed to have a very visceral affinity to the soapstone. Its tactile qualities are not to be ignored. Stainless can look good, and is certainly functional, but it doesn't really invite touch. The soapstone will have an eased square edge to differentiate it completely from the island. Three window sills, also in soapstone (we debated using marble, but decided it might look too contrived), will rest on the perimeter counter and if they don't encroach too much onto the counter, we may have an ogee edge put on the sills--as an echo of our original wood sills. The soapstone we've chosen has astonishing caramel coloured veining which looks great with the limed wood trim and picks up some of the warmer tones in the marble. I'll post a thread when we have more progress to report.

Amberley- We are going for an unfitted look in our kitchen and have had a pine work island table an 2 jam cupboards custom made and because of budget the rest of the cupboards will be Ikea Tidaholm. We're doing alot of customizing ourselves so although they might not be our first choice in doors they are a simple shaker that we think will blend in well with our other period pieces. I would really like to have the doors sprayed but cannot find a single place in Toronto who will spray them in F&B. Most places like to use their own brand. I know you can't color match BM to F&B and thats why I don't want to waste Old White on the cupboards. I thought it would be easier to pull off a cream/off white color in BM and use Old White on the walls. We're putting on a fairly large addition and doing all our own work so having someone else paint the cupboards is a gift we decided to give ourselves.I guess the other alternative is to break down and just do it.The problem with that is that they have to be sanded as well, my least favorite job, I think I recall that you were going to go with Ikea doors as well or order from Shers(spelling?) Did you paint your own and if so what kind of a finish did you get? Your kitchen is going to be gorgeous and your house looks beautiful as well. It's old is is not? Theres nothing like old American Architecture.

@sanjuangirl thanks so much - the architect's idea for the windows really pulled things together! @gothaml Thanks, this is the Newport door. We're pretty happy with the Euro-style cabinets, though I think most CP customers prefer the full inset. They've held up extremely well, with no shifting. @ratrem - Yes, you are right! We've loved living in Dot, it's really hard to explain to most, and I usually end up being too defensive or indulging in "boosteritis" especially if people haven't spent time around here. It has suffered from a simplistic picture. I think Boston has just so many great places to live - but given the great architecture , real community feeling, and proximity to downtown this neighborhood in most any other city would be completely unaffordable. But then again, look how quickly the image of Southie shifted - I guess anything is possible. We're working to get other parts of the house finished - I'll be sure to share once things start pulling together. Thank you for the compliment - that "blend" was exactly what I was going for.

Update: That coral color is identified in Farrow and Ball: The Art of Color as Blazer, just like jamies said above. However, in real life, Blazer looks nothing like that color looks in the book. Blazer is a true, blazing red-orange, whereas the book photo is a much softer coral. The wood trim is identified as as two part: String and All White. The ceiling color is not identified. This came from the people I spoke with at F & B. That same book had a photo of a periwinkle kitchen island and identified the color as Viola; however, F & B says that they've never had a color by that name. Moreover, they say that their books sometimes feature colors that are not F & B colors. Since the book states the color is an F & B one, I'd have to say the editing is poor, at the very least, so I question the identification of Blazer, too. And C2 has no record of my sample order, which has apparently ether-ized. Not much progress to report!

Your kitchen is so very pretty and the workmanship on the cabinets beautiful. I am so envious that you have a husband that can make you cabinets. My husband is excellent with a roll of duct tape!! It would be nice to see more pictures. Love the wood floors and the natural wood door. It looks like your plinth board(base board to me) would be easier to dust off than the base boards I have. I like how he did them as well as under your cabinets too.

Thanks everyone for your kind words of encouragement! I will try and post some more photos, including one of the side bookcase and shelf as soon as I get new camera batteries.
Hi Aliris19-you were right, the grill is a plinth fan heater! We kept it as I sort of like the industrial vibe it gives off. It was originally dark brown but instead of replacing it we sprayed it's grill with chrome heat-resistant radiator spray to save money as it worked perfectly. That radiator spraypaint (which is about $10 a can) has done loads in our kitchen! Our ceiling spotlights (can lighting in the States?) were all brass coloured so we just resprayed them chrome whilst still in situ (we placed a card template around them) as we couldn't afford the expense of changing them. You would never know to look at them!
Thanks Boxer-I'm glad you like the bowls on the shelf-they are my favourite too. They're by Emma Bridgewater-I'm not sure if she is known in the States or not?

It's not so much my patience, but dear hubby's. LOL

I have to say, he has been imminently patient with this whole process. *pets him* But he has great incentive.... as a part of this KITCHEN reno, the whole house got re-cabled....which means he can now get his new telly.

We had something like a 50% signal reduction due to very old coax and poor installation (splices and splits galore) which made getting a newer digital television a moot point. I told him no new telly until the cable upgrade.

It's pretty good incentive for a man to participate in the process when he is going to be rewarded with a 60-inch, flat panel Sharp Quattro unit and he got the upgraded sports package (for Chanukah) so he can watch even MORE ManU, Chelsea, RM, Barcelona, etc. etc.
