Douglas Fir interior doors
Comments (14)The solid vertical grain doug fir doors in my new house started with a suggestion in this thread for Second Growth Woodcraft ( http://douglasfirdoors.com ). Definitely worth a look if you are shopping for excellent prices on top-quality doug fir doors. The details... The website says all the right things with just the right emphasis, IMHO. References all checked out. Basil, the shop owner, is perfectly modest & a pleasure to work with. He even e-mailed photos of the doors being made. Lead time was about 10 weeks. Ordered 17 two-panel rectangular doors with arched top rails and beveled tongue & groove planks for the panels. Pre-hung on solid doug fir jambs. Payment in Canadian dollars all worked out. Shipment from B.C. Canada to northern California added about 10%, but thanks to NAFTA no taxes or duties. Arrived well-packed in perfect shape. We finished them with clear satin lacquer & they are absolutely beautiful. About 6 months old now and not even a hint of warping. My contractor & architect were so impressed that their next client is lined up to get doors from Basil too. Thanks Basil! Here is a link that might be useful: Second Growth Woodcraft...See MoreHelp! Black dust coming from door hinges
Comments (28)I have the same problem. I'm convinced this has nothing to do with graphite, but is related to the hinge not being properly lubricated. For example, In my home office (unused bedroom, of course) my passageway door has three hinges. Only one hinge squeaks, and not coincidentally, this is the only hinge with the black dust next to it. When you hear the squeak, I'm pretty sure this indicates a stop/start vibration in the hinge that actually flings metal filings away from the hinge surfaces that are squeaking. I took a magnet to the dust, and sure enough, some of it stuck to the magnet (no I didn't actually touch the dust to the magnet, the dust jumped across the distance from the molding to the magnet). So this dust is actually iron filings, coming from the door hinge itself. (note that what you think are brass hinges, are almost always steel hinges with a brass finish) The best idea I've read on this forum is the idea to use wax on the hinge pin. I suspect that any heavier wax or grease would work well, although with less expensive hinges, nothing will last forever. Lighter oils will likely just leave a mess (I think I tried light oil a few years back). If you want to avoid the black dust, ante up the extra money and upgrade to a hinge with real bearings and not just metal-on-metal pins. Good hinges are expensive, so that's why many of us don't have them....See MoreHow long to install exterior and interior doors?
Comments (7)Handymac & Innea56. I have installed several of these sliders so will try to explain a little as they can sometimes be an advantage over a regular jamb door. For instance I had a regular door in my bathroom which when open, hid the toilet behind it. The interior wall had sufficient room to install a slider, about 36" for a 32" door. Think I purchased a pocket door track and hdw. from Johnson Hdw. for about $20. Attached the track along the wall holding it out far enough to allow the door to clear the wall about a quarter inch as it rolled along. Installed a closet door bracket at the bottom as to not allow the door to contact the wall when opening or closing(swing). I also did a little trim work to cover the track using about a 3" trim piece along the distance of the track. Handywork, or a masterpiece, as I like to describe it!! I am sure you understand. Now my toilet is no longer behind the door and the room seems much larger since that old swinging door is gone. I did another that had the tub behind the door and the door was difficult to open and close, due to the toilet being on the opposite side of the tub. When you closed the door you had to step aside to permit the door to operate. Plumbing was in the wall for the tub and a light switch was on the wall where the toilet was located so that did not permit a pocket door. So I installed the door on the wall outside the bath. Found an antique piece of wireglass and installed it in a slab door thatI bought for around $20. Another masterpiece with the trim and we have a new conversation piece as visitors admire the handywork. Now when the door is open it works a a piece of art, when closed it serves the intended purpose. Another was a small bath in which the door swung into the hall hiding the linnen closet when open. So I installed a slider on the inside of the bathwall. Now I have access to my linen closet and can close the bath door when necessary. Hope this will give you some ideas for future reference....See MoreCreative ways to update old plywood cabinet doors & hinges?
