Hi - We're building in Washington State also, and we got reasonably priced solid-core interior fir doors through our local lumber supply company. (They might have been Hemlock.) We were cautioned that these weren't super-high quality like Simpson, but they turned out to be great. We're painting them white, so weren't as concerned, but they look like they'd have taken stain well. Apparently these are a new line that the distributor "Orepac" is carrying. I believe they're made in the Orient. We picked up Orepac's brochures, but they don't have a brand name on them (other than Orepac). Orepac seems to be a major distributor in Washington, so I'm sure you won't have any trouble getting a quote on them. They come in lots of different styles too (Shaker, arched, panels, glass, etc.). I have been in the market for some interior solid wood doors as well. However, I wanted Alder instead of douglas fir.
If you are interested in solid Mahogany doors, I would recommend ETO as a "lead". I have been working with them for a short time now, however, they seem to be very professional and will call you back immediately with any questions you may have. They sent me a sample of their mahogany doors and it was beautiful.

Terry, We are on the same hunt in the same state. Home Depot had some 2-panel Doug fir interior doors that were a 'special buy' that we didn't move fast enough to buy. Our first stop is going to be our local lumber yard to see what they can get. When we checked with them for ballpark estimates before we started our build, they thought fir would be about $100 more per door than the $200 for MDF. If that's the case we may have to go MDF.

When I find out any specifics, I'll post again, and if you find anything good, I hope you share the info, too!

Terry, are you planning on painting these doors? If so, I'd recommend MDF (though hardly my favorite material to work with) rather than see beautiful Douglas fir getting covered with paint. We put Douglas fir 6 panel doors in our own home with 3 coats of semi-gloss lacquer and matching clear fir trim. We love the look and consider every door to be a piece of furniture rather than a simple passage between rooms.
I went through our local lumber yard but I'd recommend having your GC price them for you as he can probably get the best price in the area you are building. In our case, they did not break the bank and give us daily pleasure.
On a professional note, nothing irks me more than to install custom cabinets etc. and see granite going in for counters only to have the owners select hollow core doors to save $. I've told my boss that I'd rather take time off w/o pay than hang those miserable things..... so for whatever kind of horrible person that make me, I'm OK with it.

We plan on buying 5 interior and 2 exterior 7' Fir doors from Northwest Door and Sash here in Eugene. They are in the public areas downstairs. This is a small custom shop that does top notch work and uses the finest tight grain vg fir. Of course they are then expensive. The front door is running us 2,500 (w/6 pieces of beveled glass), the interior doors (3 panel) are 675 w/ fir jams.
In the rest of the house we are painting the trim and doing mdf doors.
In our last house we did 5 panel simpson fir doors. They looked nice but felt cheap given their thin veneer panels.
I'm w/ trimcarpenter, if your building an arts and crafts home, buy nice doors if the public areas and paint mdf other places.

Trimcarpenter, we are looking at solid pine doors, instead of MDF doors. We'll paint them tho. What is your experience with Pine? Do you think 350 is too much for a 3'0 X 8'0 1 3/4" solid pine door, primed with a primed jamb and 4 hinges?

The price sounds about right for a door that size and 4 hinges. Is the jamb milled out of one solid piece? For a door that size/price, it should be. Also, bear in mind that even painted, Pine is a soft wood and can dent fairly easily.
We have all clear finish, solid Pine doors in our basement and love them. They have been warp-free for several years now and show no other signs of problem.

Kate, I'm not home_nw, but we're getting our OrePac doors through Evergreen Lumber in Port Orchard. My dh is a very picky woodworker and we will have VG Douglas fir trim from trees we cut on our own property and had milled, and he thinks the OrePac fir doors look good enough to have along side it, so that says a lot to me. Their fir doors are approx. equivalent in price to Simpson's paint grade.

Hi Kate - Try Angeles Millwork. Ask for Shawn McClary. Pricing depends on the door, but ours were extremely reasonable. Miller Manufacturing (in PA) also has good pricing on the OrePacs. Thomas can get them, but their pricing is generally higher. Good luck!

The solid vertical grain doug fir doors in my new house started with a suggestion in this thread for Second Growth Woodcraft ( http://douglasfirdoors.com ). Definitely worth a look if you are shopping for excellent prices on top-quality doug fir doors.

The details... The website says all the right things with just the right emphasis, IMHO. References all checked out. Basil, the shop owner, is perfectly modest & a pleasure to work with. He even e-mailed photos of the doors being made. Lead time was about 10 weeks. Ordered 17 two-panel rectangular doors with arched top rails and beveled tongue & groove planks for the panels. Pre-hung on solid doug fir jambs. Payment in Canadian dollars all worked out. Shipment from B.C. Canada to northern California added about 10%, but thanks to NAFTA no taxes or duties. Arrived well-packed in perfect shape. We finished them with clear satin lacquer & they are absolutely beautiful. About 6 months old now and not even a hint of warping. My contractor & architect were so impressed that their next client is lined up to get doors from Basil too. Thanks Basil!
