What creative things have you done to increase storage space?
Comments (24)Hi Colleen! I would love to see pictures as you go through your master bath remodel! I'll eventually be remodeling my main bathroom and the 1/2 bath in the master. In the main bath I'm taking out the tub/shower surround and replacing with a "petite" claw foot tub, no shower. New toilet, new vanity/sink, and a small baker's rack for extra storage. Putting in a medicine cabinet/mirror, frosting the window so I don't need a window treatment, and a new towel rack. Also new flooring, paint, fan, light. I'm not sure what I'm doing in the 1/2 bath, except I know I'm stealing a little room from the bedroom to put in a walk-in shower. SO...I'd love to see your progress and hear about the whole experience! Do you have colors and flooring, etc. picked out yet? Haha! Cathy--so true about the garden tub. :-)...See MoreAll new doors, doorknobs & hinges - Need help deciding on finish.
Comments (19)Thanks aprilneverends, Oliviag/bring back Sophie, Flo Mangan, daisychain01, and Jennifer Hogan. I greatly appreciate everyone's insights! I like the idea of black, however I worry if I am too heavy handed with too much black in the small space, the contrast will be too strong. In my home in Illniois, where I live all the time, I have touches of black in each room, such as: art, a cabinet, a lamp, a clock, etc. I feel it's grounding and offers a nice pop with other colors and finishes. I currently have a chair at the upholstery shop that is going to the Michigan house. It's a wood frame chair and I plan to have it painted a worn black or dark charcoal. The fabric for the back and seat cushions is a buffalo check with creme, soft grays and beige tones. I also fell in love with a painting of a white/creme cow with shades of gray, brown and green on a black background this summer. She's waiting patiently to move to Michigan. Perhaps I should post her picture as inspiration for all of you too. :-) I love her contrast, her eyelashes, her whiskers, her quiet strength with her feminine flower crown...she just makes me happy! In my Illinois kitchen I have a colorful rooster with a wide black painted mat. I bought him the same way...he just made me happy and he's found a home in every kitchen since I got him. When I see pics of black door knobs and black kitchen hardware I do really like it, but will it be too much contrast in my small spaces? Would it be better to perhaps do black lighting or other pops of black and do a worn or brushed metal on door knobs and such? Or..be brave and go black. Go big or go home! :-D I also like worn brass. I have brass plates and crystal door knobs in my little 1940's white stucco cottage in Illinois. I'm definitely a vintage girl! That comes from both mom and grandma. From the time I was just a little girl I was with mom & gram scouring antique shops (or junk shops as they called them) flea markets, estate sales and garage sales. Thanks for indulging me my chatter and big thanks for your assistance!!! Over the next couple of days I plan on visiting several stores in my area on recognizance missions to see what colors, finishes and designs make my heart sing. I'll be looking at hardware, plumbing fixtures, lighting fixtures and tile. I welcome your insights! Here's my cow....I need to name her....maybe I'll call her Matilda or Tilly. :-D...See MoreCreative idea to cover an old square built in tv cabinet
Comments (6)For cheapo fix I would probably glue a couple of strong magnets along the top inside of the box, and then take a piece of plywood, cut perfectly to fit the space, and decorate one side of it with something you think would look good there. Then glue magnets to the back side of that —— so you end up having something you can slap over the front of the box that will stay in place, but is easy to remove and put back on again....See MoreConvert double hinged door to a smaller single pocket door?
Comments (19)I like the ideas! Keeping the plumbing in the same place is always the least expensive way to go, but no matter what, it's going to be a $30K remodel if you are buying a tub and creating a new shower, vanity, etc. So putting in a pocket door will not add that much if you're going that route. I have a situation now where I have a linen closet door and bathroom door opening as your drawing. They are always banging into each other and the doorknobs get tangled up together because I leave the linen closet door ajar because the cat likes to sleep in there. I'm changing it to a pocket door and linen cabinets. The foot print is smaller for a tall cabinet and for me, a lot more functional although Kitty will have to find a new place to sleep. I'm actually using a tall kitchen pantry cabinet as it already has roll out shelves. But it does add to the cost, $4K. The closet is just framing, drywall, shelves and a door. Probably less expensive than $K. Take your time, find someone who knows the building code and keep playing with your plan....See MoreFori
