The partially opened windows created the strongest draft and the curtains would just billow out. Then windows and blinds were closed and drapes drawn during hottest part of day. It was such a relief to finally get window ac units about 1950. I remember those Playtex girdles though I never wore one...my friends and I preferred the nylon when we wore stockings but don't think they were much "cooler"...in both senses of that word...LOL In college in the early fifties we wore socks and flat shoes and no girdles. Stockings and girdles and high heels were for dress up. Of course when we went to work after college in the mid-fifties it was girdles and stockings and high heels every day. I can't remember exactly when that changed...maybe when the bra-burning days came along? I was a SAHM by that time but sure welcomed the dose of fresh air and good sense! Anyone remember the Merry Widow bra worn with cocktail and formal dresses? Strapless but it came down to waist level and was so sexy looking even girls who didn't need a waist cincher had to have one...LOL josh...See MoreOur trip across the pond
Comments (23)Rosewitch, England was definitely one of my favorite places I have ever visited. My folks took me there when I was 14, and I remember bits and pieces the Crown jewels, walking amongst the Stonehenge stones (roped off now, vandalism), Stratford upon Avon. Time for me to take my own 14YO. Im trying to think how I can get over there for a whole summer, LOL. Dlynn, I could have worked so much more. I didnt really look at night time stuff and there was loads to do. Greece: cant help you, but shoot Yasou a line, she went a few years ago. LOL Annie! Teresa, well go together. I wanted to explore more cooking and food shops/stores but didnt get to. Terri, here is more a link to Pictures of England, a website pointed out to me by Denise. I started it on Bourton on the Water, where we stayed for a few days. Thanks Sharon, I was actually thinking how can I even come close to posting her quality of travel guides, I dont do the pictures she does LOL. We might have sat at the same table in the Cheshire Cheeses dining room! Sawdust still there, but we didnt make it to the cellar. I missed a lot of the British Museum. It has changed.check out the new atrium. I couldnt keep up with DH and DS16. Afternoons, when I planned museums, I crashed. Next time! Pam, lots of people did more than we did per day! Theater every night, more attractions, I cant imagine. Gina heh heh yeah I need another vacation like a hole in my head. Speaking of whichDH has another week off in August. Nooooooooo! Kathleen, DH says he took an average of 200 pictures a day. Yup. Me, I just buy the post cards or Google the images, same thing (DARFC from the photo bugs here) Cathy, thanks for giving me the War and Peace moniker heh heh. Next time I go with CF friends! LindaC, I know. Im still exhausted. Speaking of the V&A, did you know there was a Dale Chihuly chandelier in the entrance room?...See MoreBottle cutter on order
Comments (26)I, too, bought a stand-up type bottle cutter at Michaels and had no success and ended up throwing it away in disgust! I had to buy a tile saw when I was redoing my bathroom and figured that I had nothing to lose so gave it a try with beer bottles with a good deal of success. You have to go pretty slow and I practiced quite a bit on the beer bottles but have graduated to wine bottles and am happy with the results. I have cut the bottoms off for candle holders and have cut 1" circles for windchimes... I have not tried anything that has thinner glass so can't vouch for that. Hope this helps. Comments (14)I know Al thinks I fry his a$$!! :-) Karen makes a good point, though. This is just the panic du jour. Before, it was whole milk. Then without whole milk, we're lacking in vitamin D and calcium. Then it's the sun. If we're out in the sun too long, we can come down with melanoma. But if we stay out of the sun, then we have to worry about SAD. What's another good one? Oh yeah-- COFFEE!! it's no good-- the caffeine is addictive. Wait a minute-- it IS good for you!! Red wine. CHOCOLATE!! Even POT had no redeeming medicinal value. Now, it's the cureall for those in pain from glaucoma and chemo, and the list is growing. The same thing happened a few years ago, only then it was a VALID concern, and concern for it thankfully continues even today, and that's mold remediation. I just want to try and get past this with the most REAL education about the problem, and the least amount of injury to the industry. There IS a solution, though. If you want to live longer, it's very simple. Don't eat or breathe!! You'll live forever! :-)...See More- 10 years ago
