Window Seat Cushions
Comments (10)Hi labradoodlemom! I've made cushions for window seats, bolster cushions for day beds and all kind of seat cushions throughout the years. I sew a lot, and upholster my own furniture, and I'm always thinking up some new sewing project or decorating scheme that needs a cushion. I've put in a link to the last place I ordered from, and I was very satisfied with the cushion, and their pricing. You'll find, once you start checking out different sites, that the foam can usually be the most expensive part of your project. It's very rewarding, though, to do it yourself and have it look just the way you wanted it to. Don't forget to order batting to go around your cushion, too. I usually use a spray adhesive to attach the batting to the foam before making the cover. For a window seat, I'd suggest at least a 4' or more cushion, with good density - you want something that will be comfortable and supportive to sit on. I'd also recommend that you plan on putting a zipper on one end of your cover, so you can take it off easily to launder it as needed. I do put welting on all of my cushions, but if you're looking for something without welting, I guess the site that patty cakes suggested would work. If you want a link to another site that has more detailed instructions for cushions with welting, just post again and I'll send you another link. Comments (18)Yes, it is great! So you started with an empty slate, just a room with 2 windows and a fireplace? I'm doing something sort of similar in my LR right now: Center fpl, window on the left over the window seat, bookcase on the right over a cabinet. It's not quite symmetrical, but luckily I like the old house, nothing-is-perfect feel. No pictures except in-progress ones. When we bought our house it was an ugly 60s style ranch, with carpets everywhere, only 6 windows, and dark paneling in every room. But it was on two nice acres with room for a big garden, so we took it. We couldn't afford to hire someone to do the quality of work I wanted in the house so I began doing it myself. I've turned into a carpenter and cabinetmaker along the way. We added a second floor and there's nothing we haven't changed. I really should figure out how to post pictures, because I've gotten a lot of ideas from GW, and I'm quite proud myself!...See Moreone or two shower heads? shower bench or corner seat?
Comments (7)A shower bench is a no brainer. The shower bench makes using the shower more enjoyable and does add to any romantic encounters you may have. If you have a wife like mine you better add two shower heads because mine steals all the water. I have a collection of shower bench photos that I show my clients to help pick a style. The shower bench detail can affect the placement of the drain so its wise to plan the build completely before picking or roughing in the drain. Comments (14)I had a bunch in my house before last. So many, and at the times I had two toddlers, so I took shortcuts on a lot of them. If you don't want to take shortcuts or sew them yourself, they get expensive pretty quickly. I never did get a quote under $300, even for the small ones. In comparison, I used a Joann's coupon for the foam on each one I made, and then special ordered or used specialty fabric from a higher end store and they still were all under $100. I actually think the smaller one I made for less than $50 when special order fabrics were 40% off. I had the longest one in the family room made, and it was right when the cost of petroleum was really high about 10 years ago, which made foam really expensive, and it cost more than any other piece of upholstered furniture I had at the time. (although, to be fair, I was a young mom with mostly cheap, new family furniture). In my bedroom I bought the foam and wrapped it kind of like a present so the folds on the ends were "pretty," ironed it with starch, and then hot glued it underneath and where it wouldn't show. I always planned to go back and sew it when I had time but it held up and looked great so I never did. In another room where I wanted to be able to remove the cover to wash I sewed it myself, and it was very simple, I did it in an hour or two. If you have a sewing machine, you don't even need "skills," it's really turning the fabric inside out over the cushion, pinning it together, and sewing straight lines. I didn't do a zipper on that one because the bench had 3 wooden sides that hid it anyway, so I made the back a little longer and used snaps to tuck in underneath. The last one was the most complicated, it was more "real" sewing with a zipper and welting for my living room....See MoreHonu3421
