Does anyone have Earth Song?
Comments (23)Deanna, it would be nice if Mgleason or anyone can post a pic for you now. I havenÂt taken a pic of GriffÂs Red. Mine has done a major blooming; there are spent blooms but still a handful of buds yet to open, so I will try to take some photos this weekend. The mature bush size I saw was about 6X3. Mine started out as a twig and is now more than 2 years old at 3 ft and quite narrow at just over 1 ft. There is lot more top growths and it needs to put out more basals, and I hope it will after I just dumped some alfalfa on it. IÂm sure it will put more size by the end of the season. Mgleason, I heard that you have quite a collection of Bucks, so do tell us about them, perhaps in a new thread. I can always add some more. I put a link of the photos from HMF. The color I see in my garden is darker rich red than the ones shown on HMF when they first open, but the blooms will eventually fade to that color. Here is a link that might be useful: Griff's Red at HMF...See MoreHAVE: Own root roses
Comments (0)Some of the cuttings I stuck last year (and came back strong!): 'Cardinal de Richelieu' 'Earth Song' 'Emily Grey' 'Ghislaine de Feligonde' 'Ispahan' 'Just Joey' 'Rose de Rescht' 'Therese Bugnet' I'm taking cuttings now of a load of other varieties, but I didn't want to list anything until I'm sure they'll take. These are well rooted in gallon pots now, so a local trade (Lower Mainland, BC) would be best. I posted some varieties of roses and other plants I'm looking for on my trade list, but any interesting rose or perennial would be considered....See MoreEarth Song
Comments (23)jleak: No, I prune differently for each variety. Over the years I have found Earth Song does best if pruned hard. Technically, I think Earth Song is classed as a grandiflora. Kentucky_rose: I believe vase life is average. I will say the flowers look good at all stages, from bud to fully open. And petals usually fall cleanly. But each bloom will form a hip, so I pinch off the deadheads to encourage repeat. It is a great long-lived rose. After 25 years, the thicket of canes from the base is so dense, I could probably divide it like a perennial, maybe using a chainsaw!...See MoreEarth Song, et. al.
Comments (3)Polarstern is subject to getting blackspot. I spray. It has upright growth. In my climate in NE Iowa it grows 5' tall. It is very hardy - I don't give it winter protection. It is scented. I have two, one was bought as a grafted rose bush. I managed to root the other. The grafted rose bush is a prolific bloomer. It blooms like a grandiflora, although this winter was hard on it. I am getting fewer sprays of blooms this summer. It blooms almost continuously -- although the past 10-years since Japanese beatles became so prolific, they munched on it continuously. This year I don't have so many of those bugars, so at least I can see the blooms it does get. My rooted version of Polarstern blooms less prolifically, more like a hybrid tea, which is how this bush is classified by ARS....See Morejim1961 / Central Pennsylvania / Zone 6
