No offence meant to any, but I don't think it is own root that helps the survival rate. Well, maybe with some cultivars. I had an Apricot Nectar that did not return this spring after being cut to the ground. Late spring, I decided to sp the root to plant something else. I could not dislodge the multiflora root stock in spite of vigorous attempts. I moved on. About 3 weeks later I noticed that AN had started to return and now has a bud. The same happened with Radux Bouquet also on multiflora. Sometimes it just takes time for the plant to wake up.

Several days ago I noticed a scraggly rose trying (and somewhat succeeding) to grow in almost full shade under one of our rain leaders, on the north side of the house. I only have two own root roses, some distance away. So, it may be a long sucker or a volunteer seedling. I cut off some scraggly growth, dug down as far as I could, gently pulled up the root and planted it on the southern side of our yard, against a fence. There is some shade but a fair amount of sun, during the late morning, particularly. Due to Hannah, the ground is moist. I dug a deep hole, soil is good, and watered it in. Does anyone think it has a chance? I couldn't believe it was growing where it was. Anything special I should do to help it survive the winter? Thanks, everyone. I love this forum. I water my newly potted own-roots with fish emulsion, alternated with Tiger Bloom and Mills Easy Feed liquid. They've only been in the pots since April and two of the six are already ready to move up to a larger pot. I think our cooler than normal spring is responsible. I'm in coastal SE Virginia where it normally gets hot very quickly. I do repot the own roots from the one gallon they arrive in, up to a two gallon, within a few days of their arrival. Then as soon as I see new growth I start feeding every 3 weeks. Most of my roses come from Roses Unlimited and Antique Rose Emporium so they are already a good size when they arrive. Bands scare me, never tried 'em!
