Recipe of the day March 11 - Appetizers!?
Comments (7)This corn & pecan dip has gotten raves on the Food Forum. Corn & Pecan Dip 2 8-oz. pkg cream cheese, softened ¼ c. lime juice 1 Tbsp ground cumin 1 Tbsp ground red chiles (I used 2 tsp cayenne and it was plenty hot) ½ tsp salt dash black pepper ¼ c vegetable oil 1 16-oz. can whole-kernel corn, drained 1 c. chopped pecans 1 small onion, diced (I like more) In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except corn, pecans, and onion. Beat until smooth with electric mixer on medium speed. Stir in corn, pecans, and onion. Serve with tortilla chips Or how about the classic spinach & artichoke dip? This recipe is from Southern Living. FLORENTINE ARTICHOKE DIP 1 (10-ounce) pkg frozen chopped spinach, thawed 2 (6 1/2-ounce) jars marinated artichoke hearts, drained & chopped 3 garlic cloves, finely minced 1/2 c. mayonnaise 12 oz cream cheese, softened 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice 1 c. freshly shredded Parmesan cheese 1 1/2 c. French breadcrumbs, (homemade...see note) 2 Tbsp butter, melted DRAIN spinach; press between layers of paper towels to remove excess moisture. Drain and chop artichoke hearts. Combine spinach, artichoke hearts, garlic, and next 4 ingredients, stirring well. SPOON into a lightly greased 11" x 7" baking dish. Combine breadcrumbs and butter; sprinkle over spinach mixture. BAKE uncovered at 375° for 25 minutes. Serve with assorted crackers, bagel chips, or breadsticks NOTE: To get 1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs, tear off a piece of baguette. Pulse in a food processor until coarse crumbs form. Measure crumbs, tear off another chunk, and repeat procedure until you get 1 1/2 cups These toasts are excellent. Robust Onion Cheese Toast 1 cup mayonnaise 1 8-zs pkg cream cheese, softened 4 oz blue cheese, crumbled 2 Tbsp chopped parsley 2 Tbsp minced onion ½ teaspoon minced garlic ½ teaspoon hot pepper sauce ½ teaspoon white pepper 1 loaf sliced cocktail rye bread Combine mayo, cream cheese, blue cheese, parsley, onion, garlic, pepper sauce and white pepper. Comments (26)Beautiful flowers and setting! I love seeing the full bushes in their contexts, and the roses look fantastic against your house setting. The purple underplantings are perfect, and they really set your roses off to best advantage. I agree that I've never seen Munstead Wood climb that well but it looks fantastic. And my word, that is one huge Belinda's Dream bloom! Just lovely. Cynthia...See MoreMarch Books -- What Are You Reading?
Comments (122)Kathy, some years ago I borrowed from the library Florence Nightingale by Mark Bostridge. An amazingly detailed, and somewhat daunting bio. In fact it had to go back before I had got half way through it . . . I didn't even reach the time when she went out to the Crimea. An amazing woman who didn't believe in germs because she had never seen one. But through her belief in cleanliness and order greatly she improved the filthy Army hospitals and once home, and prone on her couch, used her considerable influence to start training for nurses. She lived to be a great age and there is still a recording of her from about 1900....See MoreIs Golden Celebration a good idea?
Comments (68)I had heard this rose might get tall, but things don't usually get huge in my climate as it's just not that sunny, so I thought I'd try. However, rather than growing up, my two-year-old GC seems to be growing "out", like a wild thing... I have never quite seen a plant grow in every direction like this. When I stake it, branches tend to grow out sideways, then flop over, or flop, twist and grow upside down. Worse than any raspberry bush. Like a Clematis on steroids. It's in the back of a border, I can't seem to keep it from learning on, or hugging branches around its neighbors, and it grows fast. It's like The Stranger Things vines this year. Some shrubs like this start to grow straight-up better with time, is this one of those? Or will it need its own yard? Is there any kind of pruning that reigns this in? And how to do it? Pruning it after the first flush last year seemed to kill part of it off, which was surprising, so i don't want to go too hard on it....See Morenikthegreek
