2. Picasso: The Great War, Experimentation and Change
The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, in partnership with Ohio’s Columbus Museum of Art, premieres Picasso: The Great War, Experimentation and Change. The exhibit will examine the progression of Picasso’s art during 1912 to 1924, the period surrounding the First World War, in which he veered away from the cubism he was known for and experimented with naturalistic representation. It will feature 50 works by the artist in various media, including paintings, drawings and even costumes.

3. International Pop
The Philadelphia Museum of Art presents an exhibit focused on artwork created from 1956 to 1972, chronicling pop art’s international movement as it migrated from Britain and the United States to Western and Eastern Europe, Latin America and Japan. International Pop will include 120 works from 20 countries in various media, including paintings, sculptures, prints, collage and film.

5. Asia in Amsterdam: The Culture of Luxury in the Golden Age
In the 17th century, Amsterdam had one of the largest and most powerful trade and shipping companies in the world. The Dutch East India Company was able to import and fill Dutch homes with various Asian goods, textiles and art. This international connection inspired Dutch artists and designers of the time to create products now commonly perceived as purely Dutch. Asia in Amsterdam: The Culture of Luxury in the Golden Age explores the Dutch-Asian connection and the influence it had on Dutch design and culture.

14. Projects in Aluminum by Michael Young
Artist Michael Young’s claim to fame is experimenting with alternative materials and putting his own spin on everyday objects. Now through May 29, visitors to the Centre d’Innovation et de Design in Boussu, Belgium, can see his most successful experiments, those created with aluminum.
Cars, bikes, lamps and furniture are just a few of the objects re-created by Young. He’ll also feature projects by fellow contemporary artists who share his passion for the experimental medium.
