Lost Windows 10 Start Menu

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7, and I installed Classic Shell so that I would have a familiar start menu. At the top had been a spot titled Windows 10 start menu, and I could click on that and switch to that. First, that stopped working, and then several other things stopped responding. So I uninstalled Classic Shell. But when I rebooted, I received a Critical Error notice that Start Menu and Cortana were not working and Windows would try to fix when I signed out. I signed out and back in and no joy. Did this several times. Even shut down and rebooted, but the same. So I finally resorted to doing a hard shutdown by pressing the power button on my tower. When I rebooted, there was the Windows 10 start menu with apps. However, when I booted up my computer this evening, the start menu had disappeared. I got the welcome screen, and my normal desktop appeared. I can open and use WLM, and my browsers work. But, I do no have a start menu. Also the notification area shows notifications, but I cannot open that. Then again I received the same error message as last evening about start menu and Cortana. I am at my wits' end. How can I restore the Windows 10 start menu?

What Anti Virus is installed ? I have seen Avast do this on more then 1 occasion.

Grandms,

I did find this: Cortana and Start Menu aren't working. I did read into it a little ways and the guy said removing KB3081449 and KB3081448 updates fixed the problem. He wasn't 100% sure if it was a complete fix. I'm getting tired and couldn't read much more!

lotodig- Just so you're more confident, I've re-booted my computer many times over the years using the technique I've described. Several times, for example, my cursor has frozen so I couldn't navigate to do anything, such as re-boot normally. I didn't always know why some problem was happening, but I did know that the power button re-boot would not make anything worse. Usually the only time you can have a problem is if you decide to do a re-boot/re-start of any kind in the middle of some major activity where you are making changes to the computer, such as installing updates or doing a defragmentation. However, in the other 99.9% of cases, all you're doing is cleaning out the RAM of some unexplained little problem and starting fresh.

I have the incredimail problem. I see that incredimail's approach was to suggest that users remove the latest update which seems like a poor solution. I know it is temporary, but it sounds like incredimail doesn't have a big staff. I'm not sure the other issue you all mention is a loss of the Tiles view (don't know the name of that view), but that's what happened to me. I couldn't switch to that view via the Win Key as expected. However, after going to the remove program area and getting rid of some old bloatware, the Tiles View returned.

Using a highly rated security program is a better approach and protection requires no user invention. By doing so, neither Super Anti Spyware nor Malwarebytes will likely be needed. Your browser doesn't necessarily show all files that were downloaded. Mine doesn't even though I select "All." Outside of your browser, go to the lower left corner of the screen. Click the icon that looks like 4 window panes. At the upper left corner of the screen that opens, click the 3 horizontal lines (sometimes called a hamburger). The word "Start" will be next to the 3 line. Further down, you should see a page with a dog-ear called "Documents." Click that. A folder will open. The path to the folder is in a box. It will be something like > This PC > Documents. To go to the parent directory, click "This PC." There are several folders in "This PC." Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Music, Pictures and Video are among the common ones. Click the Downloads folder. This should list everything most you've downloaded to the default directory. It is possible to specify where to put downloaded files either by default or on an ad hoc basis. If you've done that, file could be anywhere. I haven't had any problems downloading files on Window 10, but I have it configured to always ask me where to put the files. I don't know squat about Facebook, but I strongly suspect that there are links among users' files that are not at all clear to those users. I don't recognize a "Play" folder. Did you get a new PC or upgrade older one? If the former, many PC vendors put all sorts of bloat-ware on their PCs. I remove a lot of it, but you have to know what can be uninstalled safely and what can't.

I don't know if Avast had anything to do with this, but I did find that this is not all that unusual a happening. Saw a number of fixes, and chose a complete Reset. So Windows 10 is re-installed, I still have my personal files, but all installed apps and programs are gone. Windows did save a list of apps that were removed, so I have gone through the list and decided which ones I really want to install again. It's like setting up a new computer without importing everything that you had on the old one. But this way, I'm getting rid of some old, legacy things that I really no longer use. And, I'm learning to use the Windows 10 start menu.

A new computer, we all should have one. Glad you have it fixed Grandms. Seams a bit drastic to me, but I can't say I've never done something like this either, because I have!

I'm working on a Friends Computer right now. I've Reset this computer back to Factory Specs with Windows 8. I've been installing Windows Updates seems like forever! I still don't have Windows 8.1 installed yet, then there are more Updates! Not really sure of the Speed of this computer, think I saw 1.4GHz somewhere, but it seems really slow (it's an Toshiba Laptops with an AMD Processor). Could be Single Core, Dual-Core, Quad Core, who knows, guess I could look! Just looked, it's an AMD E1-1200 Dual-Core @ 1.4GHz.

My Laptop I'm on right now is an Intel Core i5 Quad Core @ 1.6GHz with up to 2.6GHz Turbo Boost. My Laptop wipes the floor with this AMD!

Current smartphone models have dual core or greater running at 1.6 or greater processors. Both those cited laptops are at the very low end.

My old Laptop had an Intel Dual-Core 2.0GHz. My newer Laptop has an Intel Core i5 Quad Core at 1.6GHz/2.6GHz Turbo Boost. The newer Laptop blows the older laptop out of the water!

I'm not saying my older laptop was slow, that 2.0GHz Dual-Core is a much faster processor than that AMD 1.4GHz Dual-Core I'm working on.

I've got a 3.0GHz Quad-Core Desktop Computer if I really need to do anything that this New Laptop can't handle. So Far I've found nothing this laptop can't handle with ease!

Yes, My Nokia Windows Phone is a Dual-Core 1.5GHz.
