Windows 10 - got updated and lost apps

Greetings.

So my pc did an update and now I have lost the ability to click on icons on the menu bar to select apps, or calendar, etc. I can right click an icon, and then select open, but my apps don't seem to be there.

In my Web search it seems like there were other issues like this in April but not so much now. And fixes seem to be of the nature of entering strings of text at the c prompt, which I am reluctant to do as a first fix attempt. It has to be an easy setting, right?

No. Nothing happens. Like with the white 4 paned windows logo that usually displays the app selections...nothing.

marie- I have four browsers installed on my computer: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Chrome. None of them interfere with one another, even when several of them are simultaneously open. I don't know why you are having some of the problems you describe, but you shouldn't be worrying about having to choose between Firefox and Internet Explorer. They are each discrete programs, just like Word or Notepad are discrete programs. Something else is going on here, or you have accidentally made some unintended changes to Internet Explorer, but it should have nothing to do with having two browsers installed.

What Brand of Laptops Do you have? What Operating System do they have (Windows 7, Windows 8 or 8.1)? I would suggest doing a Reinstall of your Operating System using Recovery Disks. Did you make your Recovery Disks Like recommended in your Laptops Paperwork? The Manufacturers no longer send Recovery Disks, you must either make a set of DVD Recovery Disks or make a Flash Drive Recovery Disk! You may also be able to Purchase a Recovery Set or Flash Drive from the Manufacturer. I purchased a Refurbished Laptop that had a Clean Install of Windows 8 (not with the Acer Software Recovery Disks). The Seller didn't use Acer Recovery Disks but used a Retail Windows Disk that removed the Recovery Partition. I was unable to create a recovery disk not having a Recovery Partition. I wanted the Laptops Reset to factory but with that clean install the Recovery Partition was removed. Anyway, I ordered a Recovery Flash Drive from Acer for $45+ Tax shipped (about $50 all together). I've since restored my laptop to factory settings and currently have Windows 10 Home Installed! There isn't anyone trying to collect $150 a year for anything. I'm assuming that you may have some form of Virus/Malware/Spyware on your system! Windows 10 shouldn't have tried to install unless you told it you wanted to upgrade!

A new computer, we all should have one. Glad you have it fixed Grandms. Seams a bit drastic to me, but I can't say I've never done something like this either, because I have! I'm working on a Friends Computer right now. I've Reset this computer back to Factory Specs with Windows 8. I've been installing Windows Updates seems like forever! I still don't have Windows 8.1 installed yet, then there are more Updates! Not really sure of the Speed of this computer, think I saw 1.4GHz somewhere, but it seems really slow (it's an Toshiba Laptops with an AMD Processor). Could be Single Core, Dual-Core, Quad Core, who knows, guess I could look! Just looked, it's an AMD E1-1200 Dual-Core @ 1.4GHz. My Laptop I'm on right now is an Intel Core i5 Quad Core @ 1.6GHz with up to 2.6GHz Turbo Boost. My Laptop wipes the floor with this AMD!

In Edge, clicking on three dots at upper right of screen or Alt-X sequence brings up the menu. Click on Settings, General, then scroll down, you come upon options for downloads. Where to save, and whether to have a pop-up ask what to do with a triggered download. I've long found it useful and easiest to create a first tier folder called C:\Download folder. That way, I can quickly get to anything that's been downloaded without having to click, click, click through unneeded layers with obscure names in the folder tree to get to what I want. Additionally, with Alt-X or the three dot entry method, another selection is Downloads. Click on that and you can see downloaded file history, open a downloaded file, examine the folder it is in through WIndows Explorer, etc.

What about a simple reboot/ restart have tried you tried that ?

Can you show me the web site where you're seeing just one of the fixes being offered.

I would go ahead an run these 2 commands. I have had success running these while helping.

sfc /scannow

Restart after the scan is over and see if it helped. Open an elevated CMD copy-paste the following and hit Enter

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If system file checker says it can't fix errors on the first run, reboot and run system file checker again, do it 3 times and let system file checker fix what it can.

OK so evidently this is a problem associated with other issues in the last patch. Here is a good rundown on my particular problem. I ended up going about 2/3 the way through and having to reinstall all the windows apps. If anyone else has this problem just follow the instructions here.

I ran sfc /scannow 3 times, if thats what you mean? I also did a search for updates etc.

Yes, it has happened with incredimail, and they are working on it, don't about any others? there is nothing we can do but wait it out.

I have the incredimail problem. I see that incredimail's approach was to suggest that users remove the latest update which seems like a poor solution. I know it is temporary, but it sounds like incredimail doesn't have a big staff.

I'm not sure the other issue you all mention is a loss of the Tiles view (don't know the name of that view), but that's what happened to me. I couldn't switch to that view via the Win Key as expected. However, after going to the remove program area and getting rid of some old bloatware, the Tiles View returned.

I uninstalled the MS security update of Dec. 30th and also set my Pc to no longer do auto updates (for now) later we'll see?

It's not crazy to remove the latest update, mostly because MSs updates have generally been unreliable for the last year as they've pushed Win10 down everyone's PC, and pushed it based on a marketing deadline, and it is currently about half complete.

If you haven't gone to Win 10, I'd avoid it myself. If you have, delay updates at least a week if possible (not sure this is actually possible, one reason I don't use it) and check the net to see what problems people are having with the update. Then you can work around it...
