Windows 10 - got updated and lost apps

Greetings.

So my pc did an update and now I have lost the ability to click on icons on the menu bar to select apps, or calendar, etc. I can right click an icon, and then select open, but my apps don't seem to be there.

In my Web search it seems like there were other issues like this in April but not so much now. And fixes seem to be of the nature of entering strings of text at the c prompt, which I am reluctant to do as a first fix attempt. It has to be an easy setting, right?

Is there an error generated when you click on an Icon ?

No. Nothing happens. Like with the white 4 paned windows logo that usually displays the app selections...nothing.

Hi everyone! Well the garden tour was Wednesday and last evening we got to tour all the other gardens on the tour. It was alot of fun once the major work was done! My DH said my gardens had never looked so good! I admit I did stress a little over the weeds! Now I can relax a little and enjoy the rest of summer! My DLs were just starting to bloom but the Asiatic and Oriental lilies were really putting on a show! I will post some pics of the tour soon. Shirley, I am glad to see the trade is still on and I am now ready! Melinda, I will be out of town starting on Friday, July 18-22 so lets just wait till after then to ship my trade, OK... unless it will get here before the 18th??? Ellen are you going to be away anytime? I am so ready to trade again!I have not done any this summer D/T the garden tour. Marea, I will email you soon about our pending hosta trade! Annette, Hope we can finish our Valentines trade now, too. We are going to the Lakehouse either today later or tomorrow. It is a nice get-away! I hate to complain but we could really use a good rain. What Brand of Laptops Do you have? What Operating System do they have (Windows 7, Windows 8 or 8.1)? I would suggest doing a Reinstall of your Operating System using Recovery Disks. Did you make your Recovery Disks Like recommended in your Laptops Paperwork? The Manufacturers no longer send Recovery Disks, you must either make a set of DVD Recovery Disks or make a Flash Drive Recovery Disk! You may also be able to Purchase a Recovery Set or Flash Drive from the Manufacturer. I purchased a Refurbished Laptop that had a Clean Install of Windows 8 (not with the Acer Software Recovery Disks). The Seller didn't use Acer Recovery Disks but used a Retail Windows Disk that removed the Recovery Partition. I was unable to create a recovery disk not having a Recovery Partition. I wanted the Laptops Reset to factory but with that clean install the Recovery Partition was removed. Anyway, I ordered a Recovery Flash Drive from Acer for $45+ Tax shipped (about $50 all together). I've since restored my laptop to factory settings and currently have Windows 10 Home Installed! There isn't anyone trying to collect $150 a year for anything. I'm assuming that you may have some form of Virus/Malware/Spyware on your system! Windows 10 shouldn't have tried to install unless you told it you wanted to upgrade!

Michael, you're VERY misinformed on this topic. I spent my career working with this stuff in Silicon Valley and I know very well about how tech companies operate globally as well or better as anything else. Or, at least did until retirement. Apple is no different than any of the others in what it does and how it does that. Like most tech companies, Apple has utilized legal tactics to minimize its income in the US and other large countries, and has maximized income in low-tax jurisdictions. And has done so for many decades. If you know what you're looking at, all the information needed to understand tax posturing is available in any company's annual report. As part of its strategy as an EU member, Ireland introduced an ultra low corporate tax rate, mostly for foreign companies, as a way to encourage inward foreign investment and job creation. Tech companies, almost all the large ones, flocked to set up operations there of various kinds to take advantage of the in-EU low tax rate opportunities. Other EU members complained about the Irish incentives and so ultimately Ireland dropped its tax rates for domestic businesses too so that what was being offered to foreign companies was nothing special in its tax system. Apple has been in Ireland for decades, just like Microsoft, Intel, Oracle, HP, Dell, Google, IBM, and on and on and on. Hundreds and maybe thousands of them. A country with a population about half that of Los Angeles County that has tens and tens of thousands of employees working for companies in the tech sector. All are structured about the same way, all have intercompany transactions that are about the same, and all have a lot of income in Ireland taxed at low rates.All having accepted the proposition that the Irish Development Authority offered originally, tax savings in return for jobs. In recent years there have been countless press accounts and government investigations around the world about the legal approaches THOUSANDS of multinational companies have taken to minimize income and taxes in high tax countries. Be aware of lead times that are still fairly long and have your selections made in time to get materials onsite without delaying installation. We’re getting close to the finish line and the longest lead times we’ve experienced so far are: Appliances > 10 months (possibly longer) Transformer upgrade and electrical connection > 6 months Cabinets > 5 months Windows > 4 months Gutters > 2 months This means you’ll need to make decisions around related items early to get these on order. Your exterior design will need to be done so you know which windows to order. Kitchen design also needs to be finished so cabinets and appliances can be ordered. Things like lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, tile, etc. are periodically out of stock, so it helps to buy early. Which brings up… Have space to store materials as they’re delivered. We’re finding that things can take months to come in, but once they do the suppliers often demand that we take delivery RIGHT NOW. Several have said that they’ve run out of storage space.

What about a simple reboot/ restart have tried you tried that ?

Can you show me the web site where you're seeing just one of the fixes being offered.

I would go ahead an run these 2 commands. I have had success running these while helping.

sfc /scannow

Restart after the scan is over and see if it helped. Open an elevated CMD copy-paste the following and hit Enter

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If system file checker says it can't fix errors on the first run, reboot and run system file checker again, do it 3 times and let system file checker fix what it can.

OK so evidently this is a problem associated with other issues in the last patch. Here is a good rundown on my particular problem. I ended up going about 2/3 the way through and having to reinstall all the windows apps. If anyone else has this problem just follow the instructions here.

I ran sfc /scannow 3 times, if thats what you mean? I also did a search for updates etc.

Yes, it has happened with incredimail, and they are working on it, don't about any others? there is nothing we can do but wait it out.

I have the incredimail problem. I see that incredimail's approach was to suggest that users remove the latest update which seems like a poor solution. I know it is temporary, but it sounds like incredimail doesn't have a big staff.

I'm not sure the other issue you all mention is a loss of the Tiles view (don't know the name of that view), but that's what happened to me. I couldn't switch to that view via the Win Key as expected. However, after going to the remove program area and getting rid of some old bloatware, the Tiles View returned.

I uninstalled the MS security update of Dec. 30th and also set my Pc to no longer do auto updates (for now) later we'll see?

It's not crazy to remove the latest update, mostly because MSs updates have generally been unreliable for the last year as they've pushed Win10 down everyone's PC, and pushed it based on a marketing deadline, and it is currently about half complete.

If you haven't gone to Win 10, I'd avoid it myself. If you have, delay updates at least a week if possible (not sure this is actually possible, one reason I don't use it) and check the net to see what problems people are having with the update. Then you can work around it...
