Warning On Windows 10 Updates (long post)

First: I bought a pc with windows 8.1, had it a week and had all the apps that I always have on previous machines.

A week later when I turned it on, it was automatically updating to windows 10.

Lost some, not all of the apps.

Last week I went to my tools folder to launch my snagit9 app .. gone?
(paid for)

I couldn't find it anywhere!

Yesterday I cranked the machine up .. No internet connection!

My realtek adapter wasn't there!

ALL DAY I spent in trying to figure out what was wrong.

Without an internet connection you can't ask anyone!

Finally, I went to device manager, uninstalled whatever wasn't there (realtek adapter) and restarted my pc.
Success!

Well .. almost.

My BH plays games.

The games that I had purchased ... had their Legal licenses disappear!

I had not saved the keys to the games which means .. Microsoft .. in an update, erased my game licenses and now I realize .. erased my snagit9 and it's license completely!

I have found NO WAY to stop auto updates of windows 10 and thus .. Microsoft is erasing apps and unless you use them every day, you wont know it until you NEED them!

Yes, I lost a lot of stuff when they automatically upgraded me from 8.1 to 10 but what I am talking about now are the updates they do on windows 10.

I seem to have things go missing whenever there is an update of 10.

Problem is .. you don't know what is missing until you go to use it!

Not really sure how or why your computer would have Upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 without your consent. You could have rolled it back to Windows 8.1 for 30 days after the Upgrade was completed! You may still be able to do this if you haven't gone past 30 days! You should see an option to go back to previous Operating System here: Settings> Update & Security> Recovery

Windows 10 is set to Automatically Update/Upgrade your computer. You do have some control in Win 10 (when it's installed), but very little! Windows 8.1 on the other hand should have never Updated/Upgraded anything without your consent. Not really sure how this could have happened?

Some of your programs may not have been compatible with Windows 10, thus being removed. I didn't have any programs I wanted installed that weren't compatible so I had no issues with this problem.

I did just do the Major Update for Windows 10 on all of my computers. On our Two New Laptops I Did have to Reinstall the Dolby Home Theater v4. I received a notification telling me that I needed to reinstall this program to make it work! Everything else seems to be working okay. I may down the road find a certain feature not working in a program, but all of my programs do open and work!

A similar thing happened on 2 of my laptops. Both were virtually brand new when I booted them up and once on the start screen a window popped up and began the Win10 download and install. Both have been stuck in a perpetual upgrade loop ever since. Microsoft wants $150 a year to support their OS, and the laptop makers won't provide support, saying it's the OS and Microsoft's problem. I spent hours trying to figure out how to fix them and finally gave up. Everything is monetized now, so it seems any paper warranty is worthless. Maybe all of us in similar circumstances should file small claims suits against Microsoft; they nicked me for at least $2K.

patlovesdirt, I didn't mean to say I liked your garden the way it was "better" than the beautiful revamp...just that I haven't reached the point where I can get anything to grow and bloom as lovely as you do in whatever arrangement you have...LOL. It's easier than I thought to attract Monarchs. Just grow Asclepias (milkweed) and Monarchs seem to find it somehow. This was only second summer I had milkweed. Last year I reared them indoors and released. Didn't have time or energy for hand rearing this year but I check on cats and chrysalids everyday outside on milkweed. I have Incarnata 'Ice Ballet' (swamp; white flowers), Tuberosa (sp. orange flowers) and grew well over a dozen Curassavica (tropical; yellow, orange & red combination flowers) to supplement two species that are perennial here in Zone 6. Had to start tropical milkweed indoors so they'd have enough leaves and then time to flower in this zone by early-mid summer. Doubt that would be a problem in your zone 8. Flower colors/hues on tropical milkweed are hard to guarantee from collected seed since they're cross-pollinated so heavily. I've still got too many cats that had better hurry up because they could get caught up here in the cold. They need to form chrysalids and eclose before it gets too cold if they're to start their journey to Mexico to overwinter. I'm afraid some of them won't eclose from chrysalis stage before it gets too cold for them to fly. If that happens I'll detach them from wherever they made chrysalis, reattach to netting container, overwinter in unheated garage and bring them out when weather warms up NEXT year. Can't bring chrysalids into heated area during cold or they'll eclose without outdoor heat to fly anywhere let alone to Mexico for the winter. You're new guy will be on his/her way to Mexico in next couple of weeks. Somehow they find each other and start to fly en masse down south and then across southern US over to Mexico. Most people think Butterfly caterpillars are as "gross and icky" as other creepy crawlies in the dirt. Once you see the whole process from tiny little cat to seeing beautiful butterfly eclose from chrysalis you never look at the caterpillars the same again. I've gotten a little maternal with them and talk to them...I know, I've gone over the Butterfly edge but sometimes I have to rescue them from falls off tropical milkweed in containers, fights among different size cats whom I have to separate to different plants (larger ones will eat small ones) and the like. Found one newly eclosed Monarch on the ground struggling to dry its wings after its chrysalis had fallen. Picked it up and it held onto my finger in the sun for a while. Then I told him I couldn't sit there for hours and put him on milkweed stalk with flowers so he'd have nectar when ready to eat. If you want perennial milkweed the species Asclepias incarnata has beautiful pink flowers. Doesn't bloom for very long but presence or lack of flowers doesn't seem to determine whether or not they lay eggs on milkweed. They just find it somehow. The Tuberosa is much smaller and comes with usual orange flowers but there's a yellow flowered cultivar. All milkweed I have in butterfly garden was stripped bare before cats were finished eating so I had to transfer them to tropical planted in containers. Unfortunately, I lost many leaves back there to either slugs and/or mildew from too many weeks of continuous rain. Believe it or not I've never seen a Monarch nectaring from anything but the Zinnia I grow for nectar. It may be that I don't have enough sunny space to plant swaths of nectar plants and have to rely on too many containerized nectar plants in sunny places...I just don't know. That situation doesn't seem to deter hordes of Skippers of all kinds and Cabbage Whites from nectaring on everything and anything. I grew some Verbena bonariensis from seed this year. Big attractor of any creature that wants nectar. I'll probably be sorry when there are tons of selfsown seedlings next year but wanted to try it since it's heralded as a no fail attractor and it was that. NOT for small gardens but I've seen so many photos here on GW where it looks lovely among other taller perennials. Besides, it's deer, rabbit and groundhog resistant which is a big consideration for me. Those darn maple trees have grown so much over past 3 years that my sunny spots to grow most things have disappeared. That's why I grew most of the tropical milkweed in huge storage containers I got from a recycling center and rehabilitated. If you want seeds of any of the 3 varieties I have just email me through GW with your address and I'll send them to you once they've dried. The roots of the tropical might just be winter hardy in your zone 8. It would probably have top winter die off since zone 9 is probably limit for evergreen with it. Sorry for the "Monarch tome" but it's one thing I gotten to know about in gardening and I don't have a vast pool of successes to talk about yet! :) I still love your garden "before and after"!

Shirley...I am so glad you finally got your box, even if the wine got broken. It just shows how roughly the PO handles our boxes. As you saw, I had marked it "Glass" and "Live Plants". Wonder what happens if you don't mark them to let them know that there are fragile items inside??? I wish you had gotten to see the label though...It was made especially for you. Also, I have spoken to different people in various Post Offices about mailing wine. Each person gave me a different answer. One told me that it was okay to mail wine as long as it was under a certain proof. My homemade wine isn't proofed, even if it was, they wouldn't know what it was because they broke the d--n bottle;0) I'll bring you some when we go to Gatlinburg in the spring. Don't let me forget. Now for the sad news...My aunt passed away late yesterday, she was cremated today, and there will be a memorial for her tomorrow in her hometown (London, KY). This is the aunt that I have been helping my cousin by sitting with her a few times a week. Maretta (my aunt) was 66 years old and died of cancer one month after being diagnosed. Owlface- Sorry for the delay..I had assessments as well as observations made for a longer then expected day! I too am in Minnesota...Orono--- Here are 2 pictures....they are NOT any means suitable for framing! Taken just for posterity sake :-) As you can see we went with 36" white Shaker, full overlay. All the cabinets came finished on both sides. All soft close. We have yet to finish the fine details-crown molding, some kick toe fronts and couple end fillers. We did get all supplies, parts/pieces from Cabinets madeEZ just haven't trimmed everything all out. I have to select some hardware---having full overlay door fronts make it a real challenge to open without-I really thought that would be my last thing to have to decide on...I am not diggin anything at our local big box stores. Make shift counter tops are TEMPORARY! plywood by the range-real high class! Although my DH did paint the plywood black to get idea of having black counters. The opposite side a $30 remnant from Menards but I do have running water in the kitchen...better then making coffee in the bathroom! I am found your post by looking for advice on granite honed vs leather. At this point thinking I am going Black Pearl/Black Absolute with the leather finish. Going to make on last run to a new granite yard I just heard about tomorrow after school. I have looked at granite suppliers in Plymouth, Burnsville and New Hope. Why not even it out with a trip out to Rogers?? Have you decided on counters yet? Have you priced them out? Hope this helped...If you have suggestions on granite or hardware please share I am getting a bit crazy with this remodel!

Lilyfinch, to be honest I wing it as far as the lines of the beds. I use an edger shovel and eyeball it. I want to be outside right now cleaning up edges and getting rid of sod by the fence but I injured my ankle at crossfit yesterday and I am beyond annoyed with myself. I had tweaked it Monday but Tuesday it felt fine, yesterday I did a bunch of skaters and boom! My ankle told me it was very angry. Sigh. The weather was gorgeous yesterday in the mid seventies so I sat on the porch and daydreamed about the changes I want to make. I REALLY want to find the black and white anemone corms for sale but the only place I can find online that sells them to anyone has been sold out for months on end. I find the hardest part of gardening to be restraining myself. I ADORE formal English gardens which are so full of boxwoods and single varieties planted in multitudes but then I also want a cutting garden with all kinds of blue-based reds and purples and whites and pinks. The other side of the house by the AC unit has morning sun until noon and then afternoon shade, perfect for my hydrangea obsession. Unfortunately the ac units drain so much water that it floods the bed, I rigged up a hose to pipe it away into the grass but not until I realized how bad it was, AFTER my hydrangea all got terrible blackspot, which is pretty rare on a hydrangea. They are recovering slowly. The five hydrangea here in early April are blushing brides. The Japanese Maple was $5 from Lowe's, it had frost damage from a late frost after things had leafed out so I snatched it up because I adore coral barked Japanese Maples. I didn't take many pics of this area, I thought I had but I just checked and no such luck. Here is a close-up of one of the blushing bride's from June And now, they had been so full and covered in blooms but the added water just wrecked them. The rose on the left is about twenty years old, and don't tell anyone, but I kind of hate it. My old co-worker gave it to me because it wasn't happy in her yard, she wasn't sure what variety it is, some sort of David Austin. While it blooms regularly for me, the blooms don't smell like anything and they fall apart within a day, and they are only about an two-three inches wide or less. Meh.

What Brand of Laptops Do you have? What Operating System do they have (Windows 7, Windows 8 or 8.1)? I would suggest doing a Reinstall of your Operating System using Recovery Disks. Did you make your Recovery Disks Like recommended in your Laptops Paperwork? The Manufacturers no longer send Recovery Disks, you must either make a set of DVD Recovery Disks or make a Flash Drive Recovery Disk! You may also be able to Purchase a Recovery Set or Flash Drive from the Manufacturer.

I purchased a Refurbished Laptop that had a Clean Install of Windows 8 (not with the Acer Software Recovery Disks). The Seller didn't use Acer Recovery Disks but used a Retail Windows Disk that removed the Recovery Partition. I was unable to create a recovery disk not having a Recovery Partition. I wanted the Laptops Reset to factory but with that clean install the Recovery Partition was removed. Anyway, I ordered a Recovery Flash Drive from Acer for $45+ Tax shipped (about $50 all together).

I've since restored my laptop to factory settings and currently have Windows 10 Home Installed! There isn't anyone trying to collect $150 a year for anything. I'm assuming that you may have some form of Virus/Malware/Spyware on your system! Windows 10 shouldn't have tried to install unless you told it you wanted to upgrade!

Both my laptops are Asus. One is a new I7 with 4K touch screen, Zenbook. The other is an Asus with a standard definition touch screen, I think it's an I5, and it folds back to become a tablet.

Thanks for the information about getting recovery disks or usb's from Asus. I will try that. The thing that amazed me was both of mine were brand new when it happened - I hadn't even installed any software, nothing, nada, because I hadn't had them long enough to do any of that. It was literally one of the first times, on both machines, that I booted them up and this happened. They were both Win 8.1.

I wonder if while setting them up you answered a question asking if you wanted to install/upgrade to Windows 10. It's so easy to just Click Yes, Click Ok, Click, Click, Click. If you don't read thru everything carefully, it's very easy to install things you don't want to install.

I'm one of those guys that use to just Click, Click, Click and only skim thru all of the reading! I'll be the first one to tell you it's so easy to miss things like this! Believe me, I read thru it all these days!

I think I read everything too, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't just a click click on through set up. I recall using Internet Explorer a couple times before it happened. This morning I read that Microsoft has already pulled the latest massive Win10 update. The article said it was pulled without any explanation. It's probably because it's destroying people's computers...

Microsoft pulled the upgrade to the new November upgrade build from the self upgrade paths. Its difficult now for people to manually upgrade to it. The normal default automatic windows updates still has it and gives it out.

Windows updates will not automatically give the November update to a computer that has installed windows 10 within the last 31 days.

There are some install problems they still haven't put out the patch for yet. Install has problems, sometimes serious with a couple or more things - they may have stopped the windows updates for a couple days until those snafu's are parched. One is installing with a SD card plugged in is a no no.. another is installing with bit locker enabled is also a no no that the install doesn't catch.

Programs removed during the November upgrade because of their potential to cause problems to the install are put into the windows.old folder into a special folder so that they may be reinstalled - supposedly. There are some programs that just flat out will not work after the November upgrade.

The only thing I had a problem with is on my Newer Laptops and it was with Dolby Home Theater v4. I prompted me to Uninstall and then Reinstall. It is now Reinstalled on both Laptops and both are working just fine. I guess I never thought about checking the windows.old folder because I Uninstalled this program myself. I think it would have been saved there if Windows had done the uninstall. I still haven't gotten around to installing The Upgrade onto my Acer Iconia W4-820-2882 Windows Tablet yet. I've been extremely busy with my Mom and my Sister in the hospital!

This has been discussed in another forum I visit and MS has been forcing upgrades on W 7 and W 8.1. MS has apologized and said it was just a check mark in the wrong place. They tried to upgrade my Acer laptop to 10, but they could not. I had windows updates set to never and knowing they can over ride the never setting I also disabled it in services. I got a notice in the action center, went there and it told me I had important updates that needed to be installed on my computer. I took a look at the updates and there were a lot of drivers involved along with other updates. I did not enable the updates.

Before this happened I did upgrade my laptop to see what it was like. I found it took more clicks and longer to do what I wanted to do. I did not like it because I have no control over updates and did not like their privacy policy. I never buy a new computer without ordering the reformatting dvds so had no problem going back to W 8. My desktop is a W 7 and I bought it when it first came out. So I bought a windows 8.1 desktop to replace it when the time comes.
