Dashing through the snow ina self driven car

The present state of the art of self-driving cars largely depend on visual clues from pavement paint stripes. This does not work on snow covered or rain slicked roadways. Work is being done to solve this problem, and it is a very serious problem.

Note that the test car in the link below has an array of spinning sensors on top of the vehicle. From the information hinted at, I suspect that system would have trouble if the snow was deep enough to mask the edge of the pavement and I'm betting it would go bonkers on a graveled country road.
