I am NOT going to go to Santa Barbara this weekend.
Comments (22)I did not drive to Santa Barbara so I was partially successful in my quest to avoid the beast. I wrapped my car keys in bacon and fed them to the dogs last night to remove temptation. I just finished watering this morning and life was good, I was on track. At 9AM this morning I became the victim of a home invasion. 2 men, bigger and younger than me, barged in my front door. I recognized them from my orchid society. Against my will, they forced me into their car and headed for SB. What was I to do, there were 2 of them, only one of me. Once in SB I would have stood out as someone odd and bizarre if I didn't buy orchids which is what everyone else was doing like crazy. So in order to preserve my good standing in this group of 'The Usual Suspects', I got 10 from the $7.50 table at SBOE and 8 of Cal Orchid's Epidendrums. I'll post pictures on the Gallery. My kidnappers were kind enough to drive me home. No real problem except now I have to follow my dogs around for a couple of days to get my car keys back. I'll definitely NOT go to the next function in Santa Barbara, I'm not addicted and I'm in full control of my life. Nick...See MoreIs Googleâs self-driving car legal in Texas?
Comments (1)Question: If a patrolman decided he needed to pull over Google's self-driving car, how would it respond? Who gets the ticket, if any were issued? Who would do the talking, and who would hand over a driver's license for identification? What about proof of liability insurance? I wonder how it would respond to tire puncturing stop strips? For that matter, how does it respond to a blown tire?...See MoreSo when will 3-D printed home construction really arrive?
Comments (18)That's true; 3D printing would lend itself to easy customization. But unless you printed smaller units, like blocks, the machine would have to be huge. Although labor might be saved, you'd be tying up a very expensive machine for a long time. Then there's the problem of either moving the house, or if printed on-site, the machine. I imagine it will start out as a hybrid technology, building a house with mostly standard ICF blocks, for instance, and then custom printing special blocks of a different size or design. I don't know about the very latest technology, but printed parts usually aren't nearly as strong as their molded counterparts....See MoreFive months car free
Comments (18)There is no public transportation here. But there are several grocery stores within a couple miles, I can bicycle most places in town. I am more physically fit now than I was when I had my car. There are times I almost feel like an ambassador for the no-car life. People stop and talk to me all the time when I ride my tricycle, the Schwinn Meridian. I get a lot of conversations at Walmart when I'm out in the parking lot loading groceries from my shopping buggy into the Meridian's basket (I have attached a pair of bicycle panniers to the back of the basket so I have a lot of carrying capacity). Wherever they might be, Boomers like me are aging, and at some point may have to give up driving. On the plus side, there are self driving cars in the horizon, and Uber, and in some places online grocery ordering and even (not in my town) delivery. On the minus side, towns and cities are experiencing budget shortfalls and initiating new public transportation may not be in the budget for some of them. Moving into a large city already equipped with public transportation is an option, but there are tradeoffs, sometimes a big city may have significantly higher crime rates. My current choice is not for everyone, but it is working out well for me for now. Life is all about making choices, and all about change....See MoreUser
