Open Office quit working

My machine is a Toshiba Satellite L875D with 600GB HD and 6 GB of memory with Windows 8.1. It's about 2 years old.

I use Open Office 4.0.1 and was working on a word document when the screen had a slight haze come over the screen when I attempted to "copy and paste" a few lines from one word document to another one, and every thing froze. I tried ESC, Control, ALT,and Delete seeking the Task Manager and there no response to any of them, so I powered the machine down.

After re booting, I attempted opening Office Office files and Open Office opened but gave me a page to sign up as a new user. It wanted first and last name, initials and other things I don't remember.

I did not follow through. Now I can no longer open existing files without the "new" registration." I've always saved as Word files using the .doc extension.

What's happening?
