RE Open Office and conversion from MS Office

I have downloaded OpenOffice.org to my windows 7 laptop. I moved my files from my XP desktop to the laptop and when I click on the files from My Documents folder, Office 2010 Starter for either Word or Excel starts.

I want to be able to click on a file in My Documents and have it open in the appropriate Open Office. Is that possible? Is there an easy way to convert all my documents at once or will I need to open and save each and every one of them in Open Office?

If you intend to use OO instead of buying the Office suite installed then why not remove MS Office? All problems are then solved. Either your Doc and XL files will recognise OO or you will be offered the chance to associate them with OO.

Removing Office is not necessary unless you wish to. You just have to be sure before you do. Or,

START>Control Panel>Default Programs. Just follow the prompts and set OO as default for all files it can open, or select the ones you wish to associate it with.

It includes Word, Powerpoint, Excel and something else I have never used, and forget what its call, it does not include Outlook. I just ordered MS Office Home Student for $124.99 free shipping form Amazon.com. Heck, and I just, with the help of friends on the web forums, managed to set Open Office as the default application for doc. ppt. and xls. I know my wife will be happy to have MS Office back on her machine, MS has really outdone itself (money mongers that they are) in making Office available for home use at a reasonable price, keeping in mind I can install it on both my and my wife's machine, plus another home machine, for the $125 price tag.

I'm sorry that my recollection is incomplete, which is why I asked if someone else might have knowledge to share. What I had in mind was that with some "one instance" licenses, if you uninstall the software from one machine, that gets transmitted back to home base and then the license is available to install it on a different machine. I don't remember if Office works that way or not. I think it does, or did, but I'm not sure. If you're done using the old machine, it might be easier to uninstall it from the old machine before installing it on the new machine, than to find an answer to this question (if you don't get it here or elsewhere easily). Make sure the old machine is connected to the internet before starting the uninstall. As with any install/uninstall operations, do it when you can do something else at the same time so you don't need to stare at the screen for an extended period, just watching a percentage completion display.

(Apache) Open Office is a foundering project that may be about to end. Development and security efforts are reportedly grinding to a halt, not for the first time. Libre Office branched off of Open Office a few years ago. It has a very active development effort and is quite similar to OO since a few years ago the starting point was the same. Google Docs is an excellent replacement for Microsoft Office too. For the average user, there really is no "best choice". When the small numbers of things that are different and menu locations become familiar, the same utility is provided by any of them. Each of these alternatives, and a few others, will provide similar programs and capabilities and can use file formats compatible with MS Office.

Thank you for the responses. Have been tied up with family matters and haven't had a chance to get back to my "new computer challenges".
Owbist, I want to try OO before I decide about the purchase of Office 2010, so I don't want to delete the starter 2010 just yet. I only use those programs for my personal use and can't justify the expense of $120 right now. I have been using the 2003 version and it worked great for my purposes but alas I don't think I can install that version onto my new computer.
damccoy, thank you! worked like a charm....however do you learn these things??? Now I also know how to change back if it doesn't work for me.

How do you learn? I don't know. I guess it is like when you step into a puddle. Once your foot gets wet you know how and hope to remember why the foot is wet. And there in lies the problem, remembering.

I hear you, damccoy....my memory is NOT what it used to be either and my attitude is NOT what it used to be either. I find myself "cranky" about having to spend my valuable time learning something new when what I was doing was perfectly fine and suited my needs.
AND I would really prefer spending my time doing something else more fun...like quilting or sewing or reading on my kindle or gardening or scrapbooking or cooking or most anything than sitting in front of a computer screen.
And I know that I may learn a new trick or two but I really don't care....I was a happy camper with things the way they were!
