The below link shows someone else with the same question in a Microsoft users' forum. The reply suggests there is compatibility.

There is no compatibility unless YOU can install it and it works on your PC. Give it a try, there's nothing to lose. I'd stick to using the later version, no sense pressing your luck. Remember to have your license number with you, that's a required input with the install.

Another thing to check, if you have a limited number of licenses (installs) from your disks, is whether you need to uninstall it first from the old machine. It's been a few years since I migrated my Office 07 to a Win7 machine and and I don't remember how I did it. Maybe someone else can answer that question.

Thanks, Snidely. I just wondered if they changed the Win 10 operating system in such a way that old software wouldn't work. I do have the old disk with the license and I believe it should work. Never thought about the license. Might just be for one machine.

I'm sorry that my recollection is incomplete, which is why I asked if someone else might have knowledge to share.

What I had in mind was that with some "one instance" licenses, if you uninstall the software from one machine, that gets transmitted back to home base and then the license is available to install it on a different machine. I don't remember if Office works that way or not. I think it does, or did, but I'm not sure.

If you're done using the old machine, it might be easier to uninstall it from the old machine before installing it on the new machine, than to find an answer to this question (if you don't get it here or elsewhere easily). Make sure the old machine is connected to the internet before starting the uninstall.

As with any install/uninstall operations, do it when you can do something else at the same time so you don't need to stare at the screen for an extended period, just watching a percentage completion display.

I just installed my Office '03 on my new computer that has Windows 8.1 like you are talking about doing and I had no problems. Works just fine.

My 2007 Office Enterprise installed and works just fine on my W8, and following the upgrade to W8.1

Did you have to remove the program from the old computer before installing it on the new one? Don't remember how MS works with Office.

I'm afraid to uninstall from the XP machine if I have a problem installing on the new computer.
