How much is too much ?

I have been visiting various daylily websites and am gobsmacked at some of the prices people are asking for a double fan or heaven forbid a single fan of a certain daylilies. I guess there must be people out there with lots of money to throw away but I personally think asking $350 for a daylily is way out of line and that is not the most expensive that I have seen .

I recently saw one for $700 a single fan and another for $500 for a single fan. I mean ,is it me ? are people really that gullible ? I really REALLY like daylilies and grow about 1200 different cultivars and about 1000 seedlings at the moment but I think over the 10 years I have been collecting daylilies that the hybridizers have gone nuts and are just being a tad ridiculous .

I know l I know, some will say it is supply and demand but for me I cringed the one time I paid $100 for a double fan of Angel's Smile. I thought to myself ....."you are freaking nuts to pay that kind of money for a plant!!" That was the one and only time I have ever paid or will ever pay for a daylily. Never again . Patience is a virtue they say and that certainly applies to daylilies ......many if not most drop dramatically within 2 years and you don't have to take out second mortgage on your house to put a plant in the garden outside it .

Yep, too much. There is no guarantee these expensive plants do well. Just can't get myself to spend that kind of money. Besides, I always find beautiful, vigorous plants that I know will do well where I am gardening for a small fraction of those prices.

I know what you mean! The pricing is really out of reach for most normal folks. They get too expensive that I have to resort to seeds to get the possibilities to grow the offsprings of daylilies that I admire.

I feel much like rweigand about it. Make a list of must do's, needs done items and a list of wants/desires. See what those items that need done are going to cost and prioritize the rest of your list. It might help to have a general idea of cost before you start prioritizing your wants. From a real estate perspective it's a good idea to not over improve for your neighborhood... Like littlebug mentioned. You generally don't want to be the nicest home in the neighborhood because you don't help yourself by doing that, you only raise the value of everyone else's home and yours is lowered by those around you. That being said, it's pretty often that kitchens and baths are what help sell a home. If they present a wow factor or are at least pretty nice, they can help make a home more marketable. I understand you are planning on staying there long term but sometimes plans change when we least expect them. I live in an area where some of the nicer newer homes have laminate countertops and vinyl flooring. Shortly after we moved in, about 15 yrs ago, I got an estimate for Corian counters. Egads, after I saw the quote I decided a trip to Disney with memories for my family was more important than pretty countertops and I have lived with the laminate that was there when we moved in. Not hideous, but not my taste. Now I'm looking at butcher block and soapstone counters. The butcherblock will be made by a friend out of locally sourced oak and we are planning to DIY the soapstone if we can source a stone for a reasonable cost. I'm glad today I didn't splurge on that countertop years ago. I know now I wouldn't have loved the Corian because it really didn't go with my home but stone any counters were $$$ in my area back then. We enjoyed having the $ to take a couple of trips when my son was young with the $ we saved.

This guy sounds shady. What does your contract say? You both should be sticking to it. The contractor for what work is to be completed, and you for what to pay. Any changes need to be re-agreed upon with an adendum. Looks like you chose the cheapest bid (perhaps other reasons besides price), and it seems you might have gotten the shadiest guy because of it. It sounds like $4k to 5k is the going rate for your area, so the price for the full work to be done sounds reasonable. Since he didnt do the job as discussed, he doesnt get paid until its done to the contract. Or fire him and get someone else to fix it. He took you, starting by not bidding the job correctly, and then raising his price. If there was no contract, he took you there too.

Do you have recessed lighting over those work areas? If not, then yes, put lights there - I'm thinking task lighting for those spots. I did a pendant over my central table/island, recessed lighting around the room, and still did pendants over the main prep areas which are in front of 2 windows. I can see everything and love it. ETA: No hood? I see there's a window directly above the stove, so I assume not. Otherwise that's a great way to light up your cooking space. I wouldn't trade my hood with bright lights for anything.

I always assume that I will have to wait two years to acquire a new daylily. By then the price has halved.

The most I've ever spent was $75...and that was for Gossard's Wolverine on a grower's fall sale. I was really pleased with the plant, and spread pollen on several plants!

I just don't have the extra money for the expensive daylilies, but I don't think I would even if I did. I would rather wait & see how well it actually performs for others, I don't tend to baby my plants that much so delicate ones would disappear fast. And of course, knowing they would be much less in a year or so.

I don't hybridize, so generally buy cultivars that have been registered for a while, often 10 years or more. I feel guilty paying more than $15-20 for a double fan. The most I have paid is $30, for a new-ish cultivar I really want.

Nancy, now that I am working again, I budget for one expensive daylily per year. I had mentioned on the wishlist thread I wanted Black Panther. I am bringing $100 to the club auction and if that is the only daylily I get I will be happy. I will likely come home with 2 or 3 more.

My budget has always been very tight. I think the most I ever paid was $15. and I felt bad about that. Most of my daylilies I've gotten through trading or for shipping. No, I don't have the newest/greatest ones, but most are reliable and ones I really like. I don't feel bad tossing some that do poorly or I don't really like much when I've gotten them these ways.

Signet, new tet conversions are always more expensive and Rose F Kennedy is a very popular dip parent. There are some serious hybridizers would be willing to pay that price.

That is ok. Didn't know that you are in CA and yes those shipping and phyto costs can really add up. Hope you find one reasonably priced in CA.

I can. Not a ford to pay lots of money for a dayliliy ,but wouldn't even if I could.you never know if they will live or up and die when you buy them,I have bought a few that was only two dollars on a sale,some died but some is growing good, one was El Desperado that is living and very pretty last season and I shared some of it with a friend,
