Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Lighting help; how much is too much?

We're doing two globe pendants over the island, one dome pendant over the eat in nook (right side, where the bench is) and recessed lighting throughout; what I need help with is whether or not I should put a sconce over the sink and a sconce over the stove? Or is that too much? Help please

You certainly could put sconces over the sink and stove. I'm picturing something like what is in this photo:

Brass long-armed adjustable sconces are especially popular in this application!

If all the lights were turned on at the same time, it might be too much. However, working in each of those areas, a dedicated light might be very useful (stove, sink, etc.). It may be more of a challenge to figure out all the switches.

There is NO SUCH THING as "too many lights"! Our aging eyes need many more lumens to see the same things clearly that we saw well with younger eyes. More lights are always better! And incorporate dimmers into all of them so that you can adjust the levels infinitely. Dimmers are the key to being happy with your lighting. BTW, I would not do pendants on either side of an island hood. That's too many things hanging from the ceiling. I would do two cans with flood lamps. Don't forget a few cans with spot lamps to wash down the front of your cabinets to create drama. You want both flood and spot lamp recessed lighting, as well as under cabinet, and a couple of semi flush fixtures as well. Maybe even some small lamps.

Thanks so much, Homebody! Although it has not ALWAYS been FUN, we have really enjoyed this house project. I hope your dream comes true very soon...and cannot wait to see pics of your home too! =) I have enjoyed hearing about this Beadboard Wallpaper. I am wondering if those of you who have used it think it will withstand the MAJOR moisture of our 2 young sons' bathroom??? Is this paintable so it can be sealed? I am worrying what the spattering and running drips of water near the pedestal sink will do to it over time if not 'sealed' with paint???? I am still curious about the 'rules' in my initial question as well as these points about beadboard wallpaper. Thanks for the input =)

Jeff I do not think 60F is cold. I have many succulents in basement too, with lows approx. 56-57*F, and highs approx. 62-63*F. They are under lights for about 12hrs/day and just about total darkness for the remaining hours (unless I do laundry or similar there :). I water them as needed, since I consider this to be relatively 'warm' - JMO. I have many plants that may have some mechanical damage - scratches and even bites from some critters like chipmunks. I just accept it as normal - after all, they have spent summer outdoors and are exposed to elements. Even inside, there are some pests on occasion - so far, no mice for me. But there could be some chewing bugs that got in, after all - it is probably impossible to have totally 'sealed' space in house. I think your plant looks pretty good, at least to me :)

How much root circling is too much? How do you know when to intervene?

I routinely prune (using a bread knife) about 1/2" to 1" off the entire root ball, scrape any soil off the top that is above the root flare (sometimes that is 4-5"!) and loosely untangle the roots. if there are serious girdling or j roots, I cut them off. I only plant in this fashion when the trees are dormant. This is the most recent 'best practices' - the folks at SF Botanical Garden taught me this and the research coming from the universities seems to support it. I used to just rip down the sides but this is easier and seems more effective. When I find woody girdling roots on trees already in the ground I take them out with a hammer and chisel, again when the trees are dormant.

Do you have recessed lighting over those work areas? If not, then yes, put lights there - I'm thinking task lighting for those spots. I did a pendant over my central table/island, recessed lighting around the room, and still did pendants over the main prep areas which are in front of 2 windows. I can see everything and love it.

ETA: No hood? I see there's a window directly above the stove, so I assume not. Otherwise that's a great way to light up your cooking space. I wouldn't trade my hood with bright lights for anything.

There will be recessed lighting over the walk space between the island and countertops but not directly over the sink or stove. No hood because of placement of stove :)
