Hi there Sheila, I'm in the UK in Berkshire, the south east.

I'm still wishing for Berkshire to have a climate like the Mediterranean. Ah what heaven that would be. As for the star Jasmine I agree with' absolutely fabulous plant hug a heavenly perfume. X

Maybe a hybrid musk could work in shade? Pax, Moonlight, Darlow's Enigma or something of that group. I know they are not true climbers. The star jasmine does sound lovely. A clematis would also be great possibly.

I also have a jasmine that does well on our North wall but it is a 'pink jasmine' . It doesn't bloom very much though and I've always assumed that is because the shade is dense. I am also in a mediterranean climate fyi

Any rose that produces:

small flowers in the class of Hybrid Musk or Noisette, or Shrub will be shade tolerant to some degree. Cl. Hybrid Teas that have either few petals, or small flowers are somewhat shade tolerant.

Peter Beales Classic Rose nursery sells all of these:

Aimee Vibert which to me has a scent like a mixed floral perfume.

Pleine de Grace a small flowered Lens rose. This is the only one I've never smelled, so I can't tell about the fragrance, but the website says it is scented.

cl. or Spray Cecille Brunner , are very fragrant, the spray form re-blooms well, the climbing form only a little more in the Autumn.

cl. Etoille de Hollande, a red rose, is slightly shade tolerant, and has a wonderful scent.

cl. Shot Silk' a Pernetiana from the early 1900's in many hues of peach, amber and some yellow. Nota Bene in my experience the last two are only shade tolerant as climbers when they are tall enough to reach more sunlight than the bush forms of the same rose cultivar. When they are short they may not bloom as well, so give them time.

In The Rose Expert by Dr. DG Hessayon (1981) he cites Mme Alfred Carriere because "its ability to clothe a north facing wall has not been matched by many modern varieties" and that it will bloom regularly through summer and autumn. The book was written and printed in the UK so I presume he knew what he was talking about.

If the wall faces due north I don't know what would do well there; also don't know how cold it gets where you live. My first thought was a Hybrid Musk. Our neighbors have 'Cornelia' trained on a northwest facing wall where it blooms well and is happy. It's a beautiful fragrant reblooming variety with smallish flowers and excellent foliage. It's also a good wall size and trainable flat.

If the area is deeply shaded you might want to think of a completely different kind of plant.

Our Mme. Alfred Carriere is covered with p.m in partial shade, but Cornelia is nearly clean of all disease in similar shade. Lux.

Trevor White in Norwich has 3 pages of climbers for north walls on his web site. There are plenty of good ones. His roses are always large well grown plants.

Daisy beat me to it. Beales also has a list of roses for shade / north walls, but honestly, I prefer Trevor's roses, they have all done better for me than Beales.

I have Blushing Lucy (rambler) on north facing porch. It repeats in warmer zones, but not here. I also have Darwins Engima climbing on north wall, it's a blooming machine.

Although Trevor White doesn't include Souvenir de Claudius Denoyel in his roses for a north wall. I found it very good on my north wall, when I grew it in England.

Study name "Darlow's Enigma" (it came with an original name which D. didn't keep track of) would probably be a good bet merely because it is so clean. But it often starts out twiggy and small parted, like a miniature, and produces many prickles that are like fish hooks - and also often produces a dome-like, semi-shrubby habit. So those factors need to be considered if this is a narrow space, with a lot of walking by involved.

Probably by now somebody has imported this to Britain under the study name - if it was not already present under whatever its true name is. (If the latter is the case you would have to find a supplier that knows the stock under the correct name is the same as the one being grown under the study name over here).

Otherwise I have seen 'Climbing Etoile de Hollande' and 'Zephirine Drouhin' flowering on shaded house walls in Seattle (USDA 8, dull climate like Britain except summers are quite dry every year). Also maybe 'Old Blush' - it's another you see growing adequately where nobody is rose gardening - or doing much actual gardening at all - and dating from plantings probably multiple decades beforehand. I'm just not sure I've seen it on the north side of a building.

As mentioned previously 'Madame Alfred Carriere' mildews a bit where site conditions encourage this, so the recurring recommendation to use it for shaded walls seems like it wouldn't be apt - the chronic drying of the root zone by a concrete foundation is just the thing to get a susceptible rose covered in mildew.

That said I've seen it on the north side of a largish house here once, don't remember the mildew being hugely worse than on other infested examples that were growing in the open. The usual thing is a light coating of mildew with a little puckering of the newest leaves during peak mildew time in later summer, when soils are dry and the atmosphere is becoming foggy. I've never seen a level of affliction on this one where the plant looks like it is painted white or covered in mold.

'Carriere' in west-facing planters against a building at the local waterfront, where presumably they are never sprayed - as they look like they are seldom even fertilized - I don't think mildew much at all. Maybe the salt air has an effect, or they are just being kept watered enough in summer.
