I'm growing Zepherine Drouin on the northwest side of my house. The flowers are a very fragrant dark-pink and the plant is vigorous and thornless -- I like it very much.

It gets a good amount of light in the afternoon, though, where it is growing. Not sure how well it would do with just a northern exposure.

'Zepherine Drouhin' is one that is nearly always recommended for this situation - it is very tolerant of lower light conditions. 'Darlow's Enigma' and 'Mme. Hardy' are other choices.

Zepherine Drouhin opened my first roses of the season today! She has won every year but one. And she is thornless.:-)

It's a big porch, two climbers would be nice, heck make it three. Any other options out there for yellow, or golden colored roses?

I have New Dawn on one side and Zepherine Drouhin on the other side of a very large arbor on my North Side. Both are very good roses in this location. ZD smells really nice!

I grew 5 Westerlands in my old place (can you tell it is my favourite?) and the one on the North side did very well indeed, just tending to be taller and a little less bushy than those in the sun. Flowered well. Very fragrant and a lovely colour. (Planted two more here in my new place!)

I've seen 'Madame Gregoire Staechlin' flowering on a shaded wall in an old Seattle garden. Have also seen Rosa x odorata 'Pallida' and 'Climbing Etoile d'Hollande' growing and blooming in some pretty dark locations near houses in the same city.

...is the fragrance of that last one but like 'Ruth Alexander' although it is seen repeatedly in local plantings dating back a bit finding it for sale is another matter. However, while 'Ruth' may, in fact be commercially extinct I suspect it may still be possible to order in the 'Etoile' from rose specialists somewhere.

Otherwise you have to spot one in a local garden and get cuttings from it, grow your own.

Depending on height, you may also want to consider 'Lyda Rose'. Most categorize it as a 4-5' shrub but mine is trained on a fence and was 7-8' last year. Very fragrant and pretty flower with exceptional foliage from the ground to the top. They say it blooms profusely in shade. This picture is a bit washed out on the actual flower color but gives you an idea of plant structure.

I'd thought I'd share a photo of one of my favorite roses: Souvenir Madame de Leonie Viennot. It's so unusual and for now a healthy grower for a tea rose. This was my first blossom of the season. Unfortunately, it's not a repeat bloomer, but then again neither are tulips, lilies or lilacs. ;-)
