Positively Colette. Laguna and Crown Princess Margareta also has flexible canes that could be wrap around posts. Papi D. is a great rose but his canes are not so pliable - it works for me on a Monet umbrella but I am not sure that it could be used around a post or tuteur.

Piper, Consider the Tea-Noisettes.

They are extremely well-suited to Southern California, are easy to train, have excellent resistance to mildew and rust, and are fragrant.
One of the best near the coast (in our experience) is 'Reve d'Or,'

But of course, there are others.
For a different look, consider 'Excellenz von Schubert,' which makes a good climber in Southern CA, and is poiple.
It, too, has terrific disease-resistance and is fragrant, but it does need fairly acidic soil.

Reine Victoria and Mme Isaac Pereire are tall growing Bourbons that have outstanding fragrance. I don't know what disease issues they might have in your zone, however.

It's difficult to say whether rust or powdery mildew is a bigger problem for Mme. Isaac Pereire, in Southern California.
I would run as fast as I could away from Bourbons here.

I can heartily recommend Fourth of July for Southern California, but wild creme and red stripes may not be what the O.P. had in mind. :-)
Berries 'n Creme is a good SoCalif choice.

Tea Noisettes, however, are truly the climbers-of-choice for this area.

You Guys/Gals are so great!! I'm excited,,,now to just decide which 2 to get. Is it better to go with a bigger contrast of colors between the 2 or subtle? I wish I could really get 2 roses bushes per post but I don't want to make it so they won't be as great as the photos you all have posted. Would this be inadvisable? I'm such a flower and fragrance gal.

Question: Since I'll be digging out the grass around 1/2 of these 2 posts (other side of post is concrete/patio), about how far out from the posts should I remove the grass? Do you think 18" is enough? Could I get by with a foot? My real plan unbeknowst to my husband, is to slowly take over all the grass area of the back lawn and fill in with roses, perennial flowers etc. but it will have to be like osmosis. Hey, I'm really doing him a favor since eventually he won't have to mow, right? I have the same designs on the front yard too. I'm liking the look of creeping thyme as a lawn or in between other flowers. High Country Garden catalog has a great picture, lawn mowers be D#$^ed !!

My Sunset book is too small for me to see in my area if I'm this zone (23/24) or not. Lag.Niguel. So.O.C.
Every automatic zone finder site has come up with Z9 but it would be helpful to know these higher # Sunset zones and which one I'm in. How did you ID your zone if I can ask? The sunset book in my area isn't clear cut for one zone or the other due to topography, but does that really make a difference for me? Thx.

Piper, that Sunset zone is as close as I can come from the Sunset maps. We are in Camarillo.

Topography really does make a difference. Even being at the top or bottom of a hill, or the
lower or higher end of a canyon makes a difference.

Think of the way water flows.
Cold air flows downhill, as if it were water, and pools in low areas.
Whether you are more influenced by ocean air or inland air makes a difference.

Spirit of Freedom, a David Austen English rose which I acquired recently, has big, fragrant flowers with countless petals, a very old rose look. Please check it out on helpmefindroses.

I just ordered Souvenir de la Malmaison. It's available as a climber. Very fragrant and the the look that you described.
Google this one I think you'll be very pleased. My friend who is a master gardener has been growing it for years. It's available from Antique Rose Emporium.

The only question about Souv de la Malmaison is whether Piper is coastal.
A few miles inland, this rose is fine
(it can have real problems with [powdery mildew in parts of Southern California),
however, in a cool, coastal climate, blooms do not open.
They just ball and rot.
So once again, it is location, location, location.

Well, let me say this: When we bought this house (older home) orig owner had 19 rose bushes around the corner from where I want to put these new ones. The spot of this large bed is really not where they should be either, they get too much shade if you ask me. The bushes are quite old and bloom really well. So I don't know if it's the age of these roses as the reason for doing fine or what. Maybe that is helpful in my zone ID problem. My spot for this project is in full sun all day long, really too much almost. Sun will go behind a stone wall and n-bors for this new spot about 4pm-ish right now give or take.

Having said that about the "old rose area", I do get and fight mildew, but I spray regularly and some bushes are better than others about not getting it. Since we bought this home from orig owner, some bushes may be as old as 19-20 yrs old. They were 99% red, some didn't smell etc. so I'm getting rid of those as I go along. We've been here for 2 1/2 yrs. so I'm getting a good education etc.

Looks like the Sunset diff. of my zone would be 22-23 I'd say. There is a hill and some elevation between us and the coast (5 miles) so that helps a great deal. When we actually lived at the beach, we ended up leaving because the fog was so depressing for much of the summer if conditions were not right to burn it off. I'd run up and down this part. road and when you hit the hill and 2-3 miles in land you get sun and temp difference is enuf that fog is not an issue. Keep'em coming gals. I've got my list and I'm checking them twice....

In Texas I put up a 9 foot tall arbor and trained Reve d'Or over it, the blooms hung down so gracefully and the delicate color is wonderful. It was densely foliaged with pretty leaves. There are lots of beautiful noisettes but this one is really choice. My structure here is smaller and I chose Golden Celebration, which has vibrant color, great fragrance and lots of petals. It's been a healthy grower for me here--

Climbing Lady Hillingdon, a tea rose, is a very graceful and fragrant climber. It's also an easy rose, although like most climbers it takes a few years to get established.

I still think for SoCal, Reve d'Or can't be beat, so I agree with Barb, too.
Piper, if you get a fair amount of mildew, Souv. de la Malmaison may be problematical for you.
IMHO, try the bush, don't go for broke with the climber.

Don't know if the mildew in this one area is due to too much shade as mentioned or I just didn't know the best time to treat or the best chemical etc. to treat it with. I'm such a newbie to the rose thing I'm more dangerous than not. I'm liking that helpmefind....very helpful indeed. What do you think of Polka or Crepuscule??? I'll check on this lady Hillingdon too. Piper, you are up the road from me and I've wondered which zone I'm in since I've lived here. That 22 or 23 depends if you are up on a hill or down in the canyon, I guess. I came from Zone 24 so I know we get less beach air and breeze but I'm still dealing with mildew and rust. I find my 2 climbers do not have a problem with any disease: Buff Beauty and Clair Matin. BB can take some shade I'm told. Mine gets adequate sun and seems very happy.

Crepuscule, love it, I like it better the Gloire de Dijon because it repeats better for me and holds the color better. but since you have 2 spots try them both!

Yes, you can find one. Pickering has it. Trospero's Glore is also from Pickering. And Gloire de Dijon is said to do better grafted.

And, to preempt the usual "multiflora root stock does not like alkaline soil" predictable line, I would say that a bit of elemenal sulfur sprinkled around the bush twice a year would solve the problem; cheap and a gorgeous rose can be grown.
As ro SDLM climber, Ashdown (I am told) has it own root and Palatine has it grafted.

Near the coast in Southern CA, SDLM has trouble opening. It's lovely a bit inland, but under SOCAL ocean influence, it generally has problems.

Buff Beauty will probably be fine.
I know Reve d'Or will flourish at the coast.

Wow, I've culled out some of them and now I've got more to contemplate. Thank you, I'M NOT COMPLAINING HERE :).... At this time of year for my area, is it better to 1/ get it as a potted rose since bare root season here has come and gone OR...2/Order it as a bareroot? Assuming I can get EXACTLY what I want potted up (but maybe that is not possible, I don't know enuf at the moment how the rose industry works).

QUESTION: I just got D.Austin's catalog in the mail (swoon)but after reading some other posts etc. I'm not sure about them,,,I noticed that every description says "repeat bloomer" and I'm finding posts that contradict their catalog so I'm relaying on you "my friends" for tried and true climbers for my area and have been rewarded by your wonderful info and suggestions for specific roses to meet my needs. Since I really want a repeat bloomer, as I enjoy being out in my yard year round, is it more of a grower thing, as to how well they have propagated their roses to repeat bloom or just the genetics of that rose, that determines how well it repeat blooms, or is it a location thing of where you plant the rose? I know, I drive my own self crazy, being a 'thinker' personality isn't always a plus.

Leads one to ask the 'WHO IS A CREDIBLE/exceptional GROWER' question? Should one go with overall info on that particular rose (to make final decisions) or rely on how that one particular grower has developed their particular rose and pick that way? I'd like to avoid paying huge amounts for shipping but paying extra for a really good rose now, is money well spent in enjoying the rose in the future.

What rootstock should the roses I choose be grafted onto for my area or should I even open that can of worms???? I digress, back to the selection process.

Piper, some of the roses mentioned here will come to you as own-root only.
That's the only way we buy roses now. And, in fact, fewer and fewer growers are budding roses now.
In a few years, there may well be none.
It's prohibitively expensive, to be frank.

I would encourage you to look at the various on-line vendors.
You might want to order from some of the Southerners, who send roses in 1-Gal containers.
(I think Rogue Valley Roses does, as well).
Remember that bigger roses, in containers, will be more expensive to ship, and take that into consideration.

IF you find what you want budded, Dr. Huey is probably still the rootstock of choice for Southern California.
(This is not true everywhere.)
It is definitely too late to plant bare root roses in Southern California.
If you find roses here, still bare root, I would avoid them at this point.
Otto & Sons, in Fillmore, sells in 5-G, but that's quite a drive for you. (They do not ship.)

Austin Roses are a mixed bag for Southern California.
Some, which repeat well elsewhere, may bloom sparsely here, lacking a cold winter for dormancy.
We have only a handful of Austins left here (and we have grown many.
Some of those will soon be gone.
Anticipating water rationing, these are not the roses I want to depend upon.
There are, btw, some good ARS Rose Societies in Orange Co.
They may be helpful to you with regard to rose sources.
Rogers Gardens, for instance, has a history of offering a wide selection of cultivars.

This is not just hearsay and anecdote: I have taken cuttings from my Pickering 'Gloire de Dijon' for friends who insisted that they wanted it own root, and not one of them has ever amounted to a good sized plant. I have a six year old own root specimen from the Pickering plant that has never grown more than 4 feet tall, and yet I have 2 year old bud grafted plants I made myself that are twice that size already. Unless you are very lucky to have an environment that is exactly what this rose likes, own root plants of it will never perform like a grafted one will.

My grafted 'Gloire de Dijon' has matured at about 12 feet tall, and its first flush has been counted at over 800 blooms.

I second Jeri's vote for 'Reve d'Or' also, for your California climate. 'Crepuscule' is also worth consideration.

Paul, The problem with Pickering and Hortico, for us down here in Southern CA, is the Multiflora rootstock.

Where I am, our soil and water are highly alkaline. I've grown a lot of roses on Multiflora,
but if they're going to survive here, they have to get off it, onto their own roots.

I've thought maybe Fortuniana might work here. Certainly Fortuniana grows like a house afire for us.

Jeri, as I dared mentioning, sulfur easily and cheaply fix the alkaline soil problem. One should not be so dogmatic when a beautiful rose is in the picture.

Once I pick the two I want, how do I find out from the grower what rootstock they use so I can have my local nursery get them for me potted up? Is the nursery going to be able to tell me for sure the root stock that was used or would only the grower know this?

You know how on fruit trees, you can pick what rootstock you want your trees coming from when you order them.

Sure Ceterum -- and I have a few roses left that require that.
But the older I get, the more I prefer roses that are happy where I am, without coddling.
Simply put -- why not just plant a rose that will flourish in your conditions?

Piper, Almost all budded roses produced in the U.S. are on Dr. Huey.
Canadians use Multiflora (or in some cases, whatever's handy).
Some growers produce roses on Fortuniana, mostly for Florida.
If you are in doubt, contact the grower, and ASK them what rootstock they use (if any).
Remember that most major growers are moving away from budded roses, for economic reasons.
