Climbing Rose that Blooms on New Wood? & Roses for part shade
Comments (11)Thanks Dan for the info, unfortunatly, blaze and new dawn both bloom on old wood. Golden Showers looks like a nice hardy climber though, and it blooms on new and old wood. Not sure if I would want yellow though- If anyone else has a few more suggestions for a new wood blooming climbing rose? I have been seeing "Shade Tolerant" in the descriptions of some roses (including the Golden Showers) and I figured that would mean they can withstand part shade. I was hoping this meant it could still do well with 3/4 hours of direct sun a day- can anyone clear this up for me? How tolerant is "shade tolerant" when it comes to roses? And of course, if anyone is growing a rose bush/climber/polyantha in part sun, I would love to know which kind it is. Thanks!...See MorePicture time, no blooms but nice foliage
Comments (6)Hi Bananas, Some of the Kerriis are just strange & not good growers. It's not just you or your plant. I had this problem for a long time w/ a white margined Kerrii, it always grew its new leaves right into the side of a clay pot where they were almost guaranteed to fail. As I recall, Denise also had trouble w/ Kerrii varieties growing leaves which quickly aborted; both of us got pretty frustrated about it (I since lost that plant). Given all that, I would NEVER buy more Kerrii variations. While my Hydro variegate Kerrii grows nicely, it just grew a branch reverting to all green & before I could decide to remove it or not, it shed those leaves & withered that growth tip -- GRRR. Also this one makes ugly scars & bumps near its nodes which are not at all attractive. I believe others (besides Denise) will concur w/ the experience of Kerrii variations growing strangely if not badly!...See MoreBushy rose with nice foliage that produces decent cut flowers -IN indi
Comments (6)What zone are you? I think the Kordes roses would work well, I love Wedding Bells, I would also recommend Peter Kukielski's book 'Roses Without Chemicals', my library carries it, perhaps yours does too. Beautiful photos & good info. Good luck....See MoreBefore and after climbing roses
Comments (10)@mattgrowsflowers PA z6 hi! I got this rose as a band at Heirloom. It come as a twig and defoliated. It struggled forever. I think for 2 years it didn’t grow a inch. For sure a slow grower for me. I kept because I paid $40 for it and I didn’t have the courage to put it in the garbage. But since you commented about this rose, I’m almost sure this is the first year I see flowers on this rose bush. And STILL, small and skinny. In her defense i think it put some new branches this year. I got another rose called Portlandia from Heirloom as well. Amazing rose. It just had one flower. It was heavenly. I also paid $40. But it come so small that didn’t make by fall....See Morejerijen
